Temple. Thomas was raised by his maternal grandparents and eventually adopted their name (Walters).
He was a Farmer, He owned 3 Negro Slaves before the Civil War. One was a little girl, another was a girl about 18 years old at the time of Thomas Walter's marriage and the 3rd
slave was a young Man. All three these slaves were given to his wife Sarah, by Sarah's father. It is believed Thomas was an overseer for a large plantation owner when he was a young man. Thomas Walters was a 32nd degree Mason and when he died the men of the Masonic Order officiated at his funeral service. It is not known if he attended meetings in Troy or Montgomery. Attorney Joel Murphy was a very good friend and visited in his home many times. Thomas Walters loved to sing and played the Violin. He also wrote a few songs but none were ever published. However he played them on the Violin and sang. He also loved to dance, and was turned out of the Baptist Church, of which he was a member, twice for dancing. He had a happy disposition. During the Civil War he fought under General Robert E. Lee and traveled to Virginia and Maryland. Stationed in Richmond when his wife Sarah visited him twice. He was gone 4 years in the War. He fought in the battle of Cross Keys 8th June, 1862, in Virginia and was seriously injured 8 June 1862. He was also wounded at Shepherds Town 19 September 1862, and he was absent from his command, wounded at Fredericksburg, 13 December 1862. He enlisted in Company I, 15th Alabama Infantry Regiment 3 July 1861 at Troy Alabama. He was 27 years old and married when he enlisted. He was stationed at Danville, VA when he was discharged through Gettysburg PA. 12th day of July, 1863.
He was shot in the lower part of one of his lungs. Many years latter, after his return home and after he had reared a large family he took pneumonia and died. He had hauled corn in the sleet and rain the day he took sick. His ill-ness began with a hard chill. Thomas Walters physical description is as follows; Weight 165 lbs, and 5ft 10in tall, of blocky build. He had very fair skin and blue eyes and his hair was a copper color, almost red-brown.
