In her files is a form indicating that the pension application was rejected, without further supporting documentation. Letters filed by attorneys in 1842 and 1844 indicate that at lease one heir (apparently Sarah) believed that a letter from the Pension Office was misplaced someplace in Edgefield District, SC, and so she launched an investigation to find it.<p>In 1853, following the death of her mother, Rachel, Sarah hired a Washington DC, attorney, E. Hapler, Esq., to represent her in an action to receive whatever increase in her mother's widow's pension as there might have been. This action in 1853 caused the Pension Office to re-copy some of the documents that had apparently become illegible at the time, one of which was her father's original application, which then appears in her mother's file in a couple of different forms.
