The word reached his family here on the day of the Allies landed on the coast which he had helped to soften for the final stab. Since that time the family has received little word of their son's fate other than that his plane was under attack by 3 enemy fighters when last seen.

In August, Mrs. Temple was presented an Air Medal which had been awarded to her husband for exceptionally meritorious achievement.

Lt. Temple, 29, was born in Elkhart and graduated from Concord High school in 1933. He attended Purdue university for a semester and for 8 years prior to entering service was a refrigerator service man for the Northern Indiana Public Serevice Co.He enlisted in the Army Air Force at Fort Wayne March 27, 1942 and entered uniform the following June.

Lt. and Mrs. Temple became acquainted while he was in training in Texas, and were married in the chapel of the Bombardier school at Big Springs, Nov. 30, 2 weeks before Lt. Temple was commissioned.

Survivors beside the wife and parents include a sister, Mrs. Frances Johnson and a brother, Paul.

The Elkhart Truth
May 31, 1945, Page 1
In March 1942 he was an attendant at a filling station or parking lot in Elkhart Co., IN.12939 Robert died on 24 May 1944 at the age of 29 in France.12934,20437 Killed in action, some say over Berlin, others (his obituary) say in missions leading up to the Normandy Invasion, flying a B-17 in 1944.
