J.R. Graham, a conductor on the Mobile & Ohio Railroad, father of Miss Graham, surrendered to City Detectives Hunn and Roper, saying:
"'I shot him because he admitted to me that he was in the act of marrying my daughter when he knew he had an undivorced wife in Chicago.'
"Miss Graham coolly looked at the body of the man she would have soon married and said to the detectives, 'I am sorry this happened.'
"The Rev. H.S. Spragins, pastor of the First Methodist Church, was waiting on the front porch of his residence to perform the marriage ceremony when he was startled by five shots and a low moaning sound of a man calling for help. He ran into the room and saw Temple writhing in his own blood under the wedding decorations that had been arranged for his marriage.
"Graham, his wife, Mrs. Lillian Graham, and the daughter, Lena, arrived in Memphis this morning for the afternoon wedding. According to the police, the family had heard for some time that Temple had been married, but Temple maintained he was divorced from his wife.
"A few minutes before the wedding, so Graham said to the police, he called Temple into a front room and succeeded in getting him to acknowledge that he was not divorced. Guests to attend the wedding said there were some loud-spoken words, but none of them could be distinctly understood.
"The couple were to leave Memphis Saturday evening for a wedding tour.
"Graham was taken to Central police headquarters and docketed. Graham told the police at Central station that his daughter had known Temple for three years. While he (Graham) had met him two years ago, he did not recognize him until they met today for the wedding.
"'I was securing Temple's confession," continued Graham, "when he put one hand in his pocket and sprang at me like a tiger. I do not know whether he had a knife or a pistol, but my first impulse was to defend myself'
"Temple's body was turned over to a local undertaker. Police at once began telegraphing to Chicago to locate Temple's relatives.
"Detectives Hunn and Roper said that Temple traveled for a Chicago wholesale house with a branch in St. Louis, and that they believed his home was in Raleigh, NC.
"ANOTHER ACCOUNT
"Robert L. Temple, salesman for a Chicago wholesale house, was shot and killed this afternoon by J.R. Graham of Meridian, Miss., at the our set for the wedding of Temple and Miss Mina Graham daughter of the slayer. Graham claims that his daughter had been wronged by Temple.
"The father stated that he bore no malice to the man before the shooting occurred, but that he had heard reports which were contrary to Temple's vows of sincerity, and had come to make a settlement for the best.
"A settlement had been reached between the father and the lover a few minutes before, and Temple had agreed to marry the girl immediately. A license was procured and a preacher called. The Rev.H.S. Spraggins asked the father if the girl had ever been married, and the father said no.
"Then Temple was asked a similar question. Temple stated that he was married, and that the had a child by his wife, from whom he had never been divorced. The father turned to Mrs. Graham and asked: 'Shall we let it go as it is and bring disgrace upon the girl and family, or shall it be the other?'
"At that statement Temple, who was seated between Mrs. Graham and the daughter, jumped to his feet as in a fit of anger.
"'Why have you told me first and last and vowed that you were a single man?' the girl exclaimed.
"At that, Graham claims, Temple lowered his head and with his hand in his coat pocket, rushed forward. It was then that graham fired the fatal shot into Temple's abdomen.
"One of the five shots fired accidentally struck Miss Graham on the index finger of the left had as she rushed forward from where she was standing and pleaded with her father to do nothing rash. She was taken to the Lucy Brinkley hospital and the finger amputated."
His widow was quoted in another newspaper as saying there was another side to the affair, but gave no specifics.
Buried in the family burying ground near Elizabeth City, TN.
