His parents were from US, originally given as unknown, (father) and MA (mother). In 1920, the only other Temple in Sterling, MA, was Frank Temple, b 1870, who was single. Not found in MA in 1930.
He was a lodger with Harry Wilder in 1920, and was still there in 1940, but absent during the 1930 census. That means he essentially grew up in the Wilder home, since at least the age of 4 - but his relationship to Harry Wilder or Harry's sister Josephine is unclear. Harry claimed to be married in 1930, but no wife was evident. Harry claimed to be single in 1910 and 1920. The first mention nearby of a Temple came in the 1900 census, when Harry Wilder was again in the same ouse with his sister and mother. Ten houses away was the home of Byron D. and M. Augusta Allen, and enumerated as a step-grandson was Leon E. Temple, ae 10.
So, maybe Raymond has some connection with the line of which Leon was part, but he was not the legitimate son of Leon, as Leon had married Sadie Knott in 1915, and had a daughter (Marjorie) in 1916. Leon had no brothers that I know of, but had 4 sisters, none of whom married a Wilder. So, their proximity in 1900 may be nothing more than coincidence.
To get another link to Sterling, MA, one has to consider Leon's uncle, Olo Galen Temple, who was indeed married at the time of Raymond's birth, having married Grace Marguerite Warner in 1905. Olo Galen is of interest only because of timing and his occupation, which was the grocery business, but I have found no children for Olo and Grace.
Opening the search aperture even wider - grasping at straws - I found Mary Augusta Stephenson, b Mar 1848, the daughter of William and Elvira (Temple) Stephenson, of Spencer, MA. There is a remote chance that she was the M. Augusta married to Byron D. Allen, mentioned earlier - but that is more likely not the case than any real connection.

Spouse: Janet Edna (Jane) ELLIOTT-138219. However, Albert is enumerated as being single, so I am unsure of the relationships. He is clearly confused in some way with Raymond Barney based on the 1925 Iowa Census. Albert is his uncle by George Temple's second wife. His obituary also did not give the names of his parents. His obituary did give one clue, which is that he had two half sisters and one half brother who survived him. They were Erma (Bill) Dorsey of Sedro Wooley, WA, and Juanita Lodge of Kennewick, WA. His half brother was Earnest Earny of North Platte, NE. He also had 3 aunts: Mrs. Elizabeth (Otis) Johnson and Josie Norris, both of Paton, IA, and Mrs. Florence Temple of Jefferson, IA.
Of these survivors, his aunt Elizabeth Johnson was Elizabeth Temple, b 1893, daughter of George and Lucy (Hamilton) Temple. Her sister was Josie, also a daughter of George and Lucy. So - Raymond's father was the brother of Josie and Elizabeth, and a son of George and Lucy (Hamilton) Temple or George's other wife, Sarah Cartwright. Thus, he must be the son of John William Temple, as the only known son of George and Sarah, or Albert Claude Temple, as the only known son of George and Lucy. Of those two, the only one old enough to be a father in 1901 was John William Temple, son of George and Sarah (Cartwright) Temple, and he was just barely old enough (b 1883, and therefore 18 at Raymond's birth). His half brother Albert was only barely 10 when Raymond Theodore Temple was born.
