The complainant said that he had voted for Mr. Temple not because of political affinity but as a personal favor because the man had recently lost his wife and was in a financially embarrassing situation. Mr. Temple's finances had become an issue prior to the appearance of the news item when Davis Hewitt, in a similar circumstance, sued him to foreclose on a mortgage. Temple's intent was to purchase ten acres owned by Louisa Hewitt, but he was unable to pay the promissory note. The court ruled for the plaintiff and Temple was ordered to pay damages of $ 145 plus the mortgage of $ 201 owed to Louisa Hewitt."
