When he registered for the WW2 draft, he initially registered as Levcovitch, and said his mother was Anna Levcovitch. The draft registrar changed his surname to Temple. Probably something along these lines had happened: his mother, originally married to a Temple, remarried to a Levcovitch, and for unknown reasons, Norman assumed that surname. However, he apparently had not legally changed it, or he had not been adopted by his mother's husband, so his original surname was still hsi legal surname.
Alternatively, sometime after he registered for the draft in 1940, he changed his name to Temple, for reasons unknown. However, the reverse string of events described above may have been the cause - and that means his birth name was Levcovitch. This second scenario seems the more likely of the two.
When he signed his draft registration, he signed as Norman Levcovitch, and this was uncorrected. His records in SSDI are under the Temple surname. He was not found in Chicago in 1940 as a Levcovitch or a Temple.
