She was 86.<br>Known on Beacon Hill as the "fighting Quaker from Cambridge," Mrs. Newman resigned as vice president of the League of Women Voters to enter politics in 1952.<br>Running as a Republican, she was elected to the state House of Representatives, representing the 2nd Middlesex District in Cambridge.<br>"One area in which far too few women are employed, and one of the most important jobs in Massachusetts, is politics," she once said.<br>A fiercely partisan politician, Mrs. Newman went on to serve 16 years in the Legislature and two years on the state Parole Board.<br>U.S. Rep. John Joseph Moakley (D-South Boston) was sworn in with Mrs. Newman in 1952.<br>"Actually, she was `affirmed,' not sworn in (because of her religious affiliation)," Moakley said. "She had a great reputation in the House for having a passionate commitment to her work and getting to the meat of the issues."<br>By 1970, Mrs. Newman had gained enough political clout to earn the Republican nomination for secretary of state. She lost the bid, but her campaign slogan, "Get Yourself a Good Secretary," made her point that women could make good in the male-dominated political arena.<br>Mrs. Newman then took a $15-an-hour job as consultant to the Committee on Commerce and Labor. She held the position for eight years and was responsible for legislation concerning equal employment opportunities for women, minority groups, the handicapped and mentally retarded.<br>Appointed secretary of Manpower Affairs in 1971 by former Gov. Francis Sargent, Mrs. Newman continued to be a liberating voice in politics, calling on women to "shed your aprons and get into government."<br>As Manpower secretary, and the only woman in Gov. She also wrote the introduction to her father's "Notable Men of Tennessee from 1833 to 1875."<p>Lucy Horton recounted the following events in her book "Family History:"  The D. A. R. flag, which was presented to the Cruiser "Tennessee" in Hampton Roads just before the American Squadron started on its celebrated Pacific cruise in 1907, was Mrs. Horton's suggestion before the State D. A. R. conference at Memphis in 1905, and she was appointed by Mrs. Charles B. Bryan, State Regent, to get up the banner and procure money to pay for same from chapters over the State. This she did. The chapters responded promptly. This banner was presented at the hands of Miss Mary Boyce Temple, who was then State Regent.
