We visited there almost every Sunday and my brothers and sister along with some of our cousins (Randolph and Jimmie Lenoir) always went to a place we all called 'Horseshoe Hill' which was not even a hill. It was only a U shaped cut in a high bank and offered many hours of good times for all of us. Aunt Luella's biscuits were the best we ever ate and we kids used to count to see who ate the most. The best memories of all come from all of the 4th of July picnics we had there with our cousins. Junior (Seymour Temple, Jr.) would hook up a trailer to the tractor and load up all the fishing poles, food and a whole case of soft drinks (which was a rare treat then). We would all get on the trailer and Junior would haul us through the back gate about a mile to the Tangipohoa River on their property. There we would spend the day eating, fishing and just having a real good time. In 1994 I took my brothers and sister and my two children back there and told them this same story and showed them the same tractor which is now 50 years old. The place was hardly changed at all. Everything was almost as we remembered. 'Horseshoe Hill' was not quite as high as we remembered, but all of the old buildings and the house were the same." From researcher Janis Varo, I got insight into the use of Lulu versus Lula at this time:<br>"My great grandmother is a Temple and I have been doing some digging and I have a correction to make. She is listed most places as Lulu Berthene Temple b. Nov 21, 1878 in Canal Township, PA. She has been called Lulu within our family, but all my digging through Census records leads me to believe her actual true first name is Lula. On your site, you have her on the 1880 census as Lulu, but if you look at the paper copy of the census, we have lucked out with a census taker with very clear penmanship. She would have been a year old and she is very clearly Lula. By the 1940 census-which she was present for as an adult-she is also very clearly listed as Lula. Very clearly a nice lovely "a" at the end-not one of those sloppy ones that where the census taker didn't finish the top of the letter "a" and it could be construed as a "u."<br>"Lula...was a common English name. But Lulu isn't really a name in England or the US until recently-it is an Arabic name and I doubt my English Temple relatives were giving her an Arabic name in 1878."
