Japanese fighters strafed and set fire to the giant plane while the crew members hugged the ground nearby.  This episode received nation-wide publicity.<br>Lloyd was a right gunner on Boeing B-29-35-BW Superfortress #42-24524, nicknamed "Super Mouse," was assigned to the 676th Bomb Squadron, 444th Bomb Group.  <br>Having been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters and four battle stars, and Purple Heart, SSgt Temple was ready to be sent home on rotation but had one more flight.  # 42-24524 was damaged by fighters on a raid on Osaka, 1 Jun 1945, and was on way back to Iwo Jima when it exploded in flight.  The tail gunner, blown clear, was the only survivor as the plane crashed in the Pacific.  According to a detailed report by the survivor, the plane had completed its mission and was on its way to its home base when the alarm to evacuate ship was sounded. The tail gunner had just started through the escape hatch when the explosion occurred and thereby was blown clear of the plane and able to parachute to safety.<br>Killed in action.
