Of the 11 enumerated in 1910, he was the only one whose death date was unknown. It is possible that the Joseph who d 1914 was actually born after the 1910 census and was therefore an infant, but none were found thus far. If so, this was later in the war when some units combined. The problem is that there appears to have been at least two Joseph Temples who were close in age in Sparta, Randolph, IL in 1870. The other was Joseph, husband of Margaret and father of William Eves (or Eno). There is no doubt about this Joseph's having been a Civil War veteran - the problem ismatching up what is known about his service. In July 1870 he was a farmer in Sparta, Randolph, IL.<sup><a href="sources.htm#4885" class="lnk">4885</a>,<a href="sources.htm#104817" class="lnk">104817</a></sup> Possibly numerated twice, once as a farmer and once as a mail contractor. Cemetery records make his dates a bit confusing, in that there were two Joseph Temples buried in the same plot, one who died in late April 1913, the other who died in Jun 1879. Clearly the one who died in Jun 1879 was not the husband of Ida Joesting. However, given their relative ages, and the late age of Joseph when he married Ida in 1902, it seems possible that Joseph had an earlier wife, and may have been the father of Joseph who died in 1879. So, based on all the people buried in the same lot, and given their dates of death, this family has been reconstructed. Marriage to Lulu and the association of the younger Joseph with her requires proof beyond being buried together. The marriage to Margaret E. is confirmed in the census.
