Levi confused the elder and junior Josephs, creating a mess for sorting out their issue, and having Joseph be 166 still fathering children after his reputed death in 1740. The account presented here agrees with that of Temple People, Vol. II.<p>Also, Lucy Temple reports the birthplace as Bristol. He immigrated about 1671.<sup><a href="sources.htm#53212" class="lnk">53212</a></sup> The dating is explained in Temple People, Vol. II citing the research of Lee Anderson McKinney of OK. McKinney found that Lt. Col. Thomas Walker was granted 300 acres of land for transporting 6 people to America. Among these six was Joseph Temple. The date of the grant was apparently incorrectly given in Temple People, as it is 20 Apr 1787, but I believe this is a typo, and the date was 1687. He died before 16 May 1699 at the age of 33.<sup><a href="sources.htm#108499" class="lnk">108499</a></sup> His will was proved 16 May 1699, and named Hannah, and his son William, daughter Mary, and an expected child, which proved to be Joseph. Designation of the father as William follows Burke's peerage, based on the will of Joseph Temple, proven 16 May 1699. Some secondary sources locate him in Hochbury, England. Parents: <a href="b3119.htm#P22600" class="lnk">William TEMPLE-22600</a> and <a href="b3300.htm#P61890" class="lnk">UNKNOWN-61890</a>.</p><p>Spouse: <a href="b1266.htm#P34851" class="lnk">Hannah LISTON-34851</a>. Considerable confusion reigns over the identity of this Joseph and his cousin Joseph, the latter b. 28 Aug 1694. Without a doubt, Levi confused both of these Joseph TEMPLEs. There are other instances of Levi's having confused people of similar name. The implication is that the Joseph TEMPLE who married Abigail STEARNS was not the 1688 Joseph, but the later 1694 Joseph. Apparently, the 1688 Joseph does not show up after 1688, and may have died young, contrary to Levi's interpretation.<p>Analysis by Helga Andrews, expanded by Sally Eaton, draws on John Temple's estate records and has resolved the earlier confusion. (See John, b 1680 notes, describing his probate records.) John's estate was administered at the request of his father Abraham by his brother Isaac. In Abraham's request to appoint Isaac, he lists the siblings of John, eight in number, from which Joseph is excluded. There are several possible reasons this may have been true - he may have been disowned, or he had died much earlier. As to the latter, Abraham listed his children who had grown to adulthood and died, but Joseph was not among them. That argues for Joseph's having died early, before reaching maturity or marrying.<p>One final note needs to be added to him. there was some basis for Levi Temple's belief that Joseph, husband of Abigail Stearns, went to Sanford, ME. While Joseph and Abigail almost certainly did not, that leaves the possibility that Joseph, son of Abraham and Deborah, moved to that area very early, and was lost. That would fit with everything else known about his family, and about the Joseph Temple who married Abigail Stearns. Parents: <a href="b2121.htm#P5031" class="lnk">Abraham TEMPLE-5031</a> and <a href="b896.htm#P34" class="lnk">Deborah HADLOCKE-34</a>.</p><p><hr><a name="P130"></a><b>Joseph TEMPLE</b><sup><a href="sources.htm#1966" class="lnk">1966</a>,<a href="sources.htm#108500" class="lnk">108500</a>,<a href="sources.htm#108501" class="lnk">108501</a>,<a href="sources.htm#108502" class="lnk">108502</a></sup> was born on 28 August 1694 in Concord, Middlesex, MA.<sup><a href="sources.htm#108503" class="lnk">108503</a>,<a href="sources.htm#108504" class="lnk">108504</a></sup> He moved in 1729 in Westford, Middlesex, MA.<sup><a href="sources.htm#29720" class="lnk">29720</a></sup> He died.<sup><a href="sources.htm#91837" class="lnk">91837</a></sup> Some Temple Pedigrees indicates Joseph and Abigail were "though to have removed to Sanford, ME." This is almost certainly wrong, and related to Levi's confusion with another Joseph Temple. Their last known location was Westford, MA. Joseph was a farmer (most likely).<sup><a href="sources.htm#108501" class="lnk">108501</a></sup> Punished in 1745 for going to a private prayer meeting instead of going to church (although it may have been his son, Joseph and wife Sarah McKinney who were actually meant).<p>Considerable confusion reigns over the identity of this Joseph and his cousin Joseph, the latter b. 6 May 1688. Without a doubt, Levi confused both of these Joseph TEMPLEs. In fact, this opinion is supported by Helga Andrews, whose e-mail to the TEMPLE roots forum said, in part, "I am quite sure that he [Levi] mixed up two Josephs, and that the Joseph born May 6, 1688, son of Abraham TEMPLE and Deborah HADLOCK, was not the Joseph who married Abigail STEARNS. The 1688 Joseph either died young or doesn't show up later, but the Joseph who married Abigail STEARNS I believe was actually the son of Richard TEMPLE and Sarah PARLIN b Aug 28 1694. I did this research many years ago in the Middlesex Co Courthouse in Cambridge MA and did not photocopy records as I should have--they were not in my direct line, but I did enter these notes into my photocopy of the Levi Temple book and was quite convinced of their accuracy at the time!" <p>Sally Eaton followed up on Helga's analysis. She states the clue to solving this mystery has been "hiding in plain sight" in the estate record of Abraham and Deborah TEMPLE's son John TEMPLE of Concord, MA, as summarized by Levi Temple in Some Temple Pedigrees, pp. 12-13. The full answer is found in John TEMPLE's (1680-1734) probate records: LDS Microfilm #0421536, Probate records 1648-1924 (Middlesex County, Massachusetts), Probate Packet #22297. <p>John TEMPLE of Concord, MA, died on 17 July 1734 leaving no children. Five days later John's father Abraham TEMPLE, "being very aged and infirm," petitioned the Middlesex County Probate Court to appoint John's brother Isaac as administrator of John's estate. Abraham went on to list John's eight siblings: four brothers, two sisters still living, and two deceased sisters. John's brother Joseph -- and son of Abraham and Deborah (HADLOCK) TEMPLE -- is not mentioned nor are his children. This Joseph must have been deceased before 1734, leaving no children. <p>Therefore it was Richard and Sarah (PARLIN) TEMPLE's son Joseph (b. 28 August 1694 in Concord, MA) who married Abigail STEARNS on 28 November 1717 in Concord. Joseph and Abigail (STEARNS) TEMPLE were the parents of eight children born between 1718 and about 1737: Abigail, Joseph, Sarah, Ebenezer, Richard, Samuel, Thomas, and Elisha.<p>Joseph and Abigail TEMPLE's last known location was Westford, MA. This is almost certainly wrong, and related to Levi's confusion with another Joseph Temple. Sally Eaton found an important passage in Edwin R. Hodgman's History of the Town of Westford in the County of Middlesex, Massachusetts, 1659-1883 (Westford, MA: Westford Town History Association, 1883), p. 169, which says in part that the Joseph Temple who moved to Sanford, ME, went there after the end of the Revolutionary War, meaning in 1783 or later. "The development of its [Maine's] vast resources was scarcely begun at the period of the Revolution. On the return of peace and the establishment of the Union, many resorted thither to subdue its wild lands and make homes for themselves." <p>If Joseph did indeed go to Sanford, and was one of the families that did this in 1783 at the earliest, he did so when he was 90 years of age. If he moved there at that age, he was not the one subduing the land, but perhaps he did so with one of his sons or grandsons. I can find no descent on some of his children (Ebenezer and Richard), either indicating they are lost or they died early, but none of the ones included ever went to ME. Only a grandson of Joseph and Abigail, through their son Joseph, ended up in ME, and even then it was not Sanford. So, the idea that this individual ever ended up in ME seems quite wrong, if he had to do so after the Revolution. If he went to ME before the Revolution, he was there before the earliest settlers, and the records of this move are lost. More likely, Levi's report was a confusion of some sort, and even his own wording indicates that he was uncertain of this Joseph's fate. He immigrated before 1722 to VA.<sup><a href="sources.htm#108499" class="lnk">108499</a></sup> He came to Virginia as an attorney for some Bristol merchants who had established an iron works in Essex County. This is cited in Lucy Temple's William Temple, based on a deed dated 22 Oct 1722. The first grant to Joseph Temple was 14 Sep 1726, for 1000 acres in Spotsylvania County, VA. In 1722 he was an attorney for Bristol merchants at their iron works in VA.<sup><a href="sources.htm#5203" class="lnk">5203</a></sup> Joseph moved about 1727 in "Presque Isle", King William, VA.<sup><a href="sources.htm#108495" class="lnk">108495</a></sup> Eventually received grants for about 10,000 acres in Northern Virginia. He died between 1740 and 1743 at the age of 41 in "Presque Isle", King William, VA.<sup><a href="sources.htm#108494" class="lnk">108494</a></sup> He was a merchant in Bristol Parish, Prince George, VA.<sup><a href="sources.htm#9814" class="lnk">9814</a>,<a href="sources.htm#108494" class="lnk">108494</a></sup> Some sources, particularly Burke's "Landed Gentry" of 1886, apparently incorrectly have him the second son of Sir William Temple, of Bishopstrow House, Warminster, Wiltshire, England. That Sir William was close to the throne under Charles II. In any case, the "Hunting Cup" which was made in about 1680, has remained in his family.<p>To add to the confusion, Levi Temple incorrectly assigned a birth date of 1666 to Joseph, the husband of Anne Arnold, when that date was clearly that of his father. Lucy Temple's "William Temple" gives the correct placement of Joseph and his father with their respective wives.<p>The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. XVIII, pp. 88-90, gives a list of the children of Joseph and Anne (Arnold) Temple, which includes Mollie, who married Col. Thomas Elliott, and Nancy, who married John Fleet of King and Queen Co., VA, and died 7 May 1754, but excludes James and Ann. If this was even close to the actual date of marriage, then Joseph either had another wife, or they had many children out of wedlock. If the date is very wrong (and they were married before the birth of the first child), then the release of the news article in 1737 does not make sense. Received 5 pounds one shilling and four pence; also served from 1 July to 18 Nov 1781, under the same commander and received 9 pounds 4 shillings; served 138 days in 1781. Says he was wounded in Revolutionary War at Westminster, VT, 13 Mar 1775. Joseph escaped a bullet wound by means of a novel life-preserver, a quart pewter basin in which he carried his food. It was struck twice by bullets which left their marks upon it. He was knocked down in the affray and, for a time, was supposed to be dead. His skull was fractured on the left side of the forehead, and the scar remained during life. It was kept as a relic in the family of his descendants many years, until a wily peddler crushed in his hand and then bought it for a trifle. Joseph died on 23 March 1832 at the age of 88 in Dummerston, Windham, VT.<sup><a href="sources.htm#45378" class="lnk">45378</a>,<a href="sources.htm#108522" class="lnk">108522</a></sup> Some claim he is buried in Dummerston Center Cemetery, Dummerston, VT, but others say in the cemetery between the old Murdock farm and Newfane, VT. He was one of three settlers; is said to have got deed of 100 acres by lottery ticket that cost 5 or 7 shillings; gave up 30 acres for taxes, thinking nine dollars worth more than the land. In 1811, he deeded the farm to his son Joseph, he to give daughter, Lois, $50 and a cow, and something to the other children, adding, "It being the wish of an affectionate Parent that their children may continue to live in love and friendship when he shall be no more." (See History of Eastern Vermont, page 234.)<p>When he settled in the wilderness of Vermont he walked from Worcester, bringing his few possessions in a pack on his shoulders, his first work was to cut a large hollow Basswood tree for a place to sleep in, building a fire near it at night to keep off the wild beasts. Once, when passing through the woods a violent storm began to blow down trees. He hurried on and soon saw the forest levelled behind him. He married Elizabeth Wilder and had 2 children who died young. Second wife, Lois Hubbard Taylor, chose 2 Cor 12:9 for her funeral.<p>Reported in The Rise of the Temples to have owned 100 acres. His account as related to the newspaper reporter appeared in that publication 26 October 1912.<p>"OLDEST TAX-PAYER IN RICHMOND: JOSEPH TEMPLE, WHO HAS JUST CELEBRATED HIS 88th BIRTHDAY, IS OF REVOLUTIONARY ANCESTRY<p>"Joseph Temple, whose photo taken this summer, accompanies this article, is probably the oldest tax-payer in the town of Richmond. Of this town he has been a resident many years, and the 23rd of the present October found him 88 summers young. He is hale, hearty and<br>merry, quick of motion, and still pliable of limb, as those who have driven by this autumn and found him in the top of his orchard trees gathering apples can testify. Mr. Temple's orchard has been his delight. He has made a business of caring for the trees and of grafting in different kinds of fruit specimens of which he exhibits with pride to chance callers.<p>"All his life he has been a worker, never idle a minute, and his smooth farm, no less than his orchard, give indications of this 'busy bee' existence.
