His year of birth is fairly consistently in 1838 or 1839, sometimes as late as 1841 in the census.  Although undocumented, his father William may have had a wife before Sarah Oldham.  The problem is the dates given in different sources for John Washington's birth year.  All sources, from census to death records and secondary genealogies give a date before William married Sarah.  The problem concluding that William had an earlier wife, though, is William's age - since he was apparently only 19 when he married Sarah.  Had John been born as early as the 1838 or 1839 cited in the records, William would have been only 13 or 14.  While undeniably biologically possible, it is extremely unlikely.  That may mean John Washington was a nephew of William Augustus Temple, but his known uncles were even younger than William Augustus.
