Temple who married Sarah Thomson, daughter of Jesse Lewis and Rhoda (Wharton) Thomson of Bedford Co., VA. However, that marriage took place in 1852, apparently in Bedford Co., VA, and it is not clear how that is possible. However, circumstantial evidence and census information about Sarah and her sister Isabella force the conclusion that John T. Temple married Sarah in 1852, and that he was the same John Taylor Temple later found back in MO. The story is confusing, and requires some explanation, but there seems little doubt it is so. TEMPLE
One of Hardin's Most Highly Respected Citizens Passes Away
"In the death of John T. Temple, better known as Uncle Tom, not only Hardin, but Calhoun county loses an honest upright citizen; a man whose word was as good as his bond; one, who spoke no ill of his neighbor and who lived at peace with his fellowman at all times. Probably no man in this community, who has been summoned by death, had more genuine friends than Uncle Tom and the general expressions heard, when his death was announced, were, "He was a good man."
John T. Temple was born near Raleigh, North Carolina, June 2, 1842, and while but a small child was, with one sister and two brothers, brought to Lincoln County, Mo., by his parents, John T. and Jane Temple. Shortly after their arrival in Missouri, the mother and sister died and the younger brother drowned a little later. In 1848, his father left the subject of this sketch and his only remaining brother, Jas. S. Temple, with the family of a Pennsylvania German, John Hise, where he lived until manhood. Of his father, John T. Temple, nothing was ever heard from the time he left Missouri for the overland trip across the continent. The only remaining member of the family, James S. Temple, died near Hardin in 1894.
Tom Temple, as he was always known in Illinois, first came to this State in 1863 and worked on a farm near Hamburg, this county, for a Mr. Hollis Stone and his father; families who had come to Illinois at an early day from Massachusetts. These people made a lasting impression on the mind of the young man and he often spoke of their goodness of heart and many Christian virtues. In 1864, Mr. Temple returned to Missouri, where on March 1, 1864 he was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Burns and shortly afterwards moved to Calhoun county, first living on the farm of the late James Watson near Gilead, Illinois. He with his brother James enlisted in the army in 1864 though belonging to different regiments and while in the service on Dec. 17, 1864, his first
child, Mollie E. Temple, was born. Two other children, Rose E. and Charles Temple were the result of this union. Mollie E. Temple became the wife of Dr. G.B. Smith and died June 22, 1902. Two years later, Nov. 9, 1904, the wife and mother passed away.
From 1863 until his death, Uncle Tom lived in Calhoun county except one year, from 1876 to 1877, when he was in the State of Texas. His life, while in this state, has been like an open book and his greatest fault, if fault it may be termed, was that he always did more for others than he could afford in justice to himself. Since the death of his wife, his daughter Rose has been his constant companion and faithfully cared for him during the later years, when helpless on account of bodily affliction.
On Saturday, April 22, 1916, during the noon hour, his spirit was released from the pains of an increasing bodily affliction to meet those on beyond, after a pilgrimage here of nearly 74 years.
In conversation with his daughter, Miss Rose, some time ago, he expressed a wish that six of his friends, whom he named, should act as pall bearers, when death cane and his wish was carried out. He also asked that Elder Jno. S. Wilson, a minister of the Church of Christ, and a friend for many years, should conduct his funeral services which were held at the home Sunday afternoon in the presence of a large crowd of sorrowing friends.
His remains were laid to rest beside those of his wife, who preceded him in death twelve years ago, in Hardin's Silent "City of the Dead". The casket was covered with beautiful flowers, tokens of esteem from friends.
To the bereaved son and daughter, we extend our deepest sympathy."
from Calhoun Times, April 27, 1916.
He was buried in the Hardin Cemetery, Hardin, Calhoun, IL. However, he was clearly with his wife in the 1880 census, so if he went west, he returned to a wife risen from the dead. Clearly, some confusion exists in the reporting.
