"Then one of the rebels stumbled and his rifle went off. Foster's pickets, instructed to expect a surprise attack, sounded the alarm and the battle began before the Confederates could launch their charge. The Rebels rushed the square and Foster's men poured a heavy fire from the cannons. His sharpshooters from the Cave hotel windows also took a toll" (Lew Larkin, p. 161).<p>"According to Pearl (TEMPLE) TATE, the farmers around Lone Jack, who were predominately southern sympathizers, organized themselves into Confederate volunteers and rode to Lone Jack early on the morning of 16 Aug. The sun rose bright, and the Confederate volunteers marched with the Rebels towards Lone Jack from the west. John S. was carrying the Confederate flag and was one of the first to be shot. Although severely wounded, he did not die until that evening. "There have been various estimates of the number killed and wounded in the battle, but the accepted figure is about 200 killed and 400 wounded. There were many officers killed on each side" (Ibid.).
