The problem is that the two children were enumerated without their father in 1860, and their mother was named Lydia. She and the children were staying with Uriah Gillett, possibly related to Lydia, but that is unclear. In 1870, though, they have a new father and their apparent mother is Amanda. I think Jerome and Amanda must be their aunt and uncle, and that the children may have been adopted. Adding to that view is the 1860 census, in which Lydia and the children were enumerated next door to Jerome, who does not appear to be married. This puzzle can be solved in the following way. If Lydia was a Gillett, then she and the children might have been visiting her brother (?) living next door in 1860. So, Jerome and Lydia were married in about 1855, and were the parents of William and Eva. However, before 1870, Lydia died (or was divorced) and Jerome married Amanda, who first appears in 1870. That fits the facts, but isn't documented, so it is just a theory.
