It is a letter dated December 24th 1857, King William County VA. There is no envelope so no proper names or addresses (did they use envelopes in those days?) other than it is from a father to his son "Tommy" in Illinois. The writer talks about having delayed writing until he can no longer put it off. He implies that the boy is staying with a Mr. and Mrs. Davidson or possibly Dawson and he must be a good boy to them. The father says that since his arrival the people in Virginia have not judged him, unlike some where the boy is, and forgives them. He asks the boy to write him in Richmond." Further research, with the aid of Grace Temple, revealed "information from the Peoria newspapers relating to James H Temple and a Dr. James Swans(z)ey being indicted in Chicago for manslaughter resulting from the death of Regent (sp?) Lawson following an abortion performed by Dr. Swansey in July 1857 in Chicago. The early August Chicago Tribune accounts of the purported actions of the two men are quite vivid. Obviously no libel laws in those days. I could not find any Tribune articles about the trial outcome other than a piece put in by Dr. Swansey in November stating that he had been fully acquitted and because 'James H. Temple by the nolle pros. entered upon the indictment against him was deprived of any public opportunity of exculpating himself and relieving himself of the very unjust and unfounded imputations,....He (Dr. Swansey) deemed it necessary to submit to the public the following sworn statement of the facts coming to my knowledge from the girl herself during recent relations with her care as a physician.' There follows a sworn statement attesting to James' actions as those of a concerned parent and in the best interests of the girl. Also that James was not the father of her child. She was apparently the 18 year old Renat Temple from Norway living in the Temple household in the 1850 census. The newspaper says she came to live with the Temples at the age of 2 following the death of her parents. She would have been about 25 at her death." Some research claims he died on the day of the census, 9 Jul 1870. This seems to be some confusion, since the 1870 Mortality Index says he died at age 59 in Apr 1870. That is his father's age, and is well before the census in 1870. The confusion is not with his father, since his father died well before that date. Also, the location was Richmond, VA, where he might have been visiting, but he was certainly not a resident. He died of paralysis, and was a dry goods merchant. He is linked with this family in the 1870 Mortality Index, which connected him to family number 1289, which was Henrietta and her children. Buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA.
