Unmarried. His parents were both from PA.<p>The date of his move to MT is unknown, but there was a story behind it. He was a cook in a coal mining camp in PA, when one day he accidentally spilled hot coffee on a miner. The miner attacked Ike and in self defense, Ike swung at him with a potato masher and killed the miner. He was exonerated by self defense, but he apparently never forgave himself. He moved to MT in the early 1900s and settled in the Dryfork section of the Little Belt Mountains where he filed a homestead on Deep Creek Park. He filed some mining claims for copper and gold, but never made much from them. He was in mental decline around 1918, and apparently in the winter of 1920, he was found in his bunk in his cabin, with his legs frozen to the knees. He was taken to the hospital and recovered a bit, but asked that he go back to Pa to see his sister (unspecified which one, but could have been Mary, Cora or Jennie). His sister sent money for his return.<p>From another source, Dan Bittinger ([email protected]) had an Aunt Bernice who spent part of her childhood in Cascade County, MT. She left a manuscript behind, and included in it was a snipped about Ike which further informs who he was. His note to me said, "...she says Ike Temple was a bachelor who was rumored to have had trouble with the law back east. He was a good neighbor and stopped by from time to time (they were the Calvert family). He had a large cabin in the nearby mountains and made some sort of art work from pressed wild flowers. He always carried a 45 on his hip.<p>"The story is that a couple of local hunters were caught out in bad weather for the night and stopped at Ike's cabin. He wasn't home but most folks in the mountains back then had an open door policy for those in need, so they took care of their horses then headed into the cabin to stay that night. When they walked into the dark cabin both fell into a deep hole. Ike had dug a pit just inside the front door and put a rug over it. They figured he had put it there in case bounty hunters came after him. They got out, re-saddled their horses and took off. <p>"From what she wrote, bounty hunters were active in the area and not well liked. If someone was starting a new life and a good neighbor, no one asked about his past."
