Buried in Tacoma Mausoleum, Tacoma, WA. Laurel Wanrow provided the following:
Hugh was born in Oregon during the short time his family was living near Henry Clay's brother William Temple. Hugh, at age 16, helped his father Henry Clay build a cabin to homestead in the Davis Lake Valley in 1884, three miles east of the present site of Morton. After building the cabin Harry left with the horses by the same route they entered. Henry Clay and Hugh, along with other homesteaders H. M. McCune and A.M. Green, spent four days exploring a shorter route to Chehalis via the Tilton River through Bear Canyon. They were successful, finding a route that could save from twenty to twenty-five miles of travel. He moved there with his family in 1886.
Hugh homesteaded himself in Tilton River Valley at a location that is now Resort of the Mountain Retreat. Their house was lit with carbide lights from their own small power plant. They had invested all their money into the Hi-Carbon Mine. Hugh was the president. It went under and he had a heart attack and died. Maize continued to live in Morton, WA until she died in 1953. They had one child, who by some stories died in childbirth and was buried in their flowerbed. There is however there is one grave of a baby son 10 April -10 May 1909 on the Temple plot in the Morton Cemetery that is unaccounted for. The date shown agrees with her grave marker. DAR records say she was the daughter of Jonas and Lydia (Flood/Floyd) Temple. Her husband and children were also mis-assigned in Some Temple Pedigrees to Huldah Temple, daughter of Jonas and Lydia (Floyd) Temple. The source of the confusion, I believe is the persistent assignment of her birth date as 22 Jun 1794, which is completely inconsistent with the birth dates of her children, the first having been born in 1798. Somehow, it seems, the compilers of Some Temple Pedigrees, and apparently the DAR's records, have assigned Hulda (Temple) Humes Gardner to Jonas and Lydia Temple based on confusing a marriage date for a birth date. Old Place belonged to the Tunstalls at the end of the eighteenth century, and was sold in 1796 to Humphrey Temple of Chatham Hill and his wife Susannah Walker. From then it passed to their daughter Mary, wife of Hezekiah McLelland.... The McLelland's daughter Martha married the Reverend John Shackford in 1846, and spent her life in this home, which she and her husband renamed Orange Grove....He was also a circuit rider [Methodist circuit---mentioned earlier in the passage], and had come to King and Queen from Dover, New Hampshire. He was pastor of Shepherd's Church in 1860 when the present brick building was erected, and preached the first sermon from its pulpit when it was ready for use in May.... The Shackfords suffered much tragedy in the Civil War years. Their
seventeen-year-old son was killed at the battle of Five Forks and his body was never found.... At Orange Grove four of the younger children, a son and three daughters, died of scarlet fever.... After the war a near-tragedy occurred when Mr. Shackford, having decided to turn the old outside kitchen into a workshop, contrived andirons out of two long shells thought to be duds. Just after his wife had called him in to dinner they exploded, interrupting his blessing and blowing out the end of his workshop. Husband and wife both died in 1900, and their son William, a doctor, lived at Orange Grove with his wife, a McLelland cousin. Joseph Shackford followed his father's profession and became a noted preacher and educator in the county. He built a house across a
field from his parents' home and called it Peach Blow."
