His father was a physician and his mother was a landscape painter. He claimed a collegiat education - but the registration form wasn't clear about whether it was his mother who was college educated or Horace. His brother or brothers were dead, as were his sister or sisters, but his parents were apparently still alive in 1882. He had been treated for pleurisy in the NY Charity Hospital for three weeks. The cause of his existing dependence, though, was disorderly conduct, not further explained, but it may have been that the department of corrections had removed him from being an inmate ad put him in the Almshouse for a three month term. Hence the assessment that he would recover from his dependence. He was able to support himself as a painter. His parents were both from IL. Unmarried in 1880. Not found before 1880 in the census. He was tough to nail down because his claims were so varied. Despite the rich detail he provided on entry to the NYC Almshouse, his parents could not be further identified.
