Conflicting information exists on his unit. Some less reliable sources confirm he served as a private in the 17th US infantry. Some records indicate he may have served in the 37th Infantry, but they do not indicate which. I believe it might have been the 37th Massachusetts, because only 3 units of 37th Infantry participated in the Battle of the Wilderness, two of them in the Confederacy (VA and NC). There were no Temple, Temple(s), or Temples assigned to the southern units. The only two Temples assigned to ANY unit of 37th Infantry were Lorenzo and William Temples of MS. That left only the 37th MA or the 37th US for Henry. It is possible, because of this uncertainty, that if he was serving in the 37th or 17th US Infantry, that he was not Henry D. Temple from MA.
