In a 1981 newspaper article, Temple said the plane was circling near the battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay awaiting word that the Japanese had signed the articles of surrender. The plane carried orders to bomb the Japanese Imperial Palace if there was any hitch in surrender ceremonies, he said. Temple spent 21 years in the US Air Force, retiring in 1965.
