Temple was a crew chief with the plane, which was poised to carry out a secret mission if the Japanese had not surrendered in September 1945.  In a 1981 newspaper article, Temple said the plane was circling near the battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay awaiting word that the Japanese had signed the articles of surrender. The plane carried orders to bomb the Japanese Imperial Palace if there was any hitch in surrender ceremonies, he said. Temple spent 21 years in the US Air Force, retiring in 1965.
