In part, it is hard because of a redesignation as the 9th Infantry Division. Sometime in the summer, the 9th liberated the town of Momignies, in the Hainaut district of Belgium, and the timing is such that his death may have been related to that fighting. He is probably buried in Belgium, though he is not listed in teh Veteran's Administration website in any national cemetery. However, the fat that his headstone was ordered 5 years later indicates one of three things - his body was exhumed and brought home for burial, his gravemarker in Greenlawn Cemetery is cenotaph, or the Veteran's Administration has lost track of his burial. Of these, the last is considered a very low probability. A newspaper article about the burial services, dated 24 Mar 1949, indicates his body was brought home because an actual burial was performed on 28 Mar 1949.
