Subsequent research by the Knowlton genealogist revealed, successively that the name of Joseph Knowlton, son of John and Sally Holden Knowlton, was not (1) Harriet Jane, nor (2) Harriet, but rather, JANE Temple. Moreover, she was the daughter of William Temple and Jane Riker. But neither is that all. His name was not originally Knowlton - but Darling or Dorling, as he was adopted by John and Sally Holden Knowlton. As confusing as this is, the situation appears to be that there are two Joseph Knowltons, since the entry in the Westboro VR is not Jane but Harriet. If so, she might be the daughter of Thomas Hyran and Sarah Lillian (Hudson) Temple of Jackson, Madison, TN in 1900. A little less likely, but still plausible, is that she was the daughter of Charles Liston and Mary (Bybee) Temple of Davidson Co., TN, in 1900. In the latter case, she would have been 17 at the time she would have married Adams, and that might be the reason the marriage was not to be published.<br>However, if the key is not TN, but rather Maury County in specific, then she might be Etta May Temple, daughter of Charles and Anna (Young), enumerated in Maury Co., TN in 1900. The enumerated reversed the names for Charles' wife and his eldest daughter in the 1900 census, and in 1910, she was not enumerated with her family. It may be that Etta, had she been known as Hattie or if Hattie was a mistaken transcription of some sort, missed the 1910 census because she was already married to Adams.
