He enlisted in the Navy on 5 Dec 1944 at Hutchinson, KS. As a S2C(RM), received aboard LST52 on 27 Oct 1945, having come from USN TADCEN, Shoemaker, CA. Changed rating to S1C(RM) on 1 Dec 1945. Changed rating to RM3C on 1 Feb 1946. Received as a passenger aboard the USS Rockingham en route to Pearl Harbor on 6 Jun 1946. Service # 343-33-52. Although it was not clear when he changed to the Air Force, he became a Chief Master Sergeant in the Air Force. His obituary apparently got this confused, and had him serving 30 years in the Navy and retiring as a Master Chief, but his Veterans Affairs records credit him with service in both and as a Chief Master Sergeant. However, there were two other Harold Lee Temples with whom he might be confused - one (1927 KS-2008 NV) had KS in common with him, and another one (1921-1980), who served in the Air Force with whom he may be confused. However, there is an obituary, cited in the general notes, that makes little sense. It is dated 2 Apr 2008, and says his wife Sumiko and his children were his survivors, he having died 27 Mar 2008. Buried in Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Sierra Vista, AZ. There were two Harold L Temples born in Aug 1927 in KS. One was the son of Clifford Lloyd and Thelma (Wilson) Temple, the other being the son of Lee William and Ruth (Hendershot) Temple. Separating them is a problem in part because of their similar birth dates, and the obituary of one of them, which contains misleading information. The obituary said, "TEMPLE, Harold L., 80, of Sun City Center, Fla., passed away March 27, 2008. He retired as master chief from the U.S. Navy after 30 years of service. Survivors include his wife, Sumiko, daughter, Cissy Temple-Betz, a son, Clifford, and his wife, Jeane, and two grandchildren, Cliffie and Victoria. A memorial service with military honors." The obituary was published on 4 Apr 2008. Harold L. Temple, son of Lee William Temple, died on 27 Mar 2007, exactly one year earlier than the obituary, according to the SSDI, but also placed his place of death in Sun City Center, FL. The reason for a one year discrepancy is not understood.
They may both be named Harold Lee Temple, but this is uncertain.
It is not clear if both were in the Navy, but certainly one of them was. Another problem with the obituary is that it the father of Clifford was also a Navy Master Chief and died in Mar 2008. This disagrees with Veterans Administration and SSDI information. The problem may actually be that the two Harolds actually were born one day apart in Kansas, and that both served, at least for some time, in the Navy. However, Veteran's Administration information says Harold Lee Temple served in both the Navy and the Air Force. That VA information says he never made Master Chief, but he did retire from the Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant.
