He flew mainly out of New Guinea and Finschhafen. He reported one flight over the Coral Sea when he lost an engine about midway through his 500 mile flight. Nearly everything on board had to be dumped, but they made it. "That was an experience I will never forget. The plane had a full load, so we had to throw most of it off but we made it in on one engine, that's one time I was really praying and my prayers were answered, too." On another flight into a mountainous area of New Guinea, his aircraft was surrounded by natives after he landed. Although the Australians had been there and the people were semi-civilized, "...they wear headdress and bones through their noses. When we cut the engines after taxiing up the landing strip, they swooped around the plane, hollering like indians in the movies. It made us wonder at first whether we were safe or not. They wear very little clothing and it's nothing to see a woman nursing a pig, so you can see that things were quite primitive yet. Some of the men are used as police in breaking up wars between other tribes and in keeping trouble-makers out of the valley."<p>After a typhoon destroyed much of the needed supplies and equipment on Okinawa, Harold was among the first to fly into Okinawa to resupply them. He flew for five hours over 800 miles of the Pacific carrying tents and supplies. When troops were to be sent to Japan as part of the occupation force, Harold flew a C-46 with 35 passengers to Atsugi, Japan. One unusual flight was when his whole cargo was only 2 white rabbits needed by a magician entertaining the troops. Another time, he delivered two chickens and three watermelons to a hospital near his base for his friends to enjoy them for Christmas in 1944. In all, he flew about 270,000 miles in 19 months.
