There was something definitely unusual with Gordon Tillman's family. The census evidence and marriage records indicate he had two families - there seems no other way to reconcile the marriage dates and the census data. For instance, in 1920, Gordon and Gertrude were enumerated with their two year old son Donald and a stepson, Claude Murphy. Marriage records show Gordon married Gertrude Froemel in 1925, so she can't be Froemel. However, Froemel had no previosuly married a Murphy. Gordon had, however, married Gertrude Nora Clow in 1921. She went by both Nora and gertrude, but she was the Gertrude who had married Murphy and she was the one who was the mother of Claude Murphy every time Claude was in the census.<br>In 1930, however, Nora Clow was enumerated by herself with her son Donald, who was born before either marriage of Gordon to either Gertrude. Nora's obituary says she was a Clow, and that her son was Claude Murphy, and Donald Temple.<br>It looks like Gordon may have married someone - possibly Gertrude Nora, before 1918 - no marriage record yet found - and became the father of Donald. They may have divorced, or the marriage annulled - who knows? - but they remarried after 1920. In 1930, it seems that Gertrude Nora apparently found out about Gordon's other wife, and in the census, claimed that Gordon had died - which he hadn't.<p>Marriage records seemed to indicate his middle initial was an I - it appears so in handwriting with the middle initial next to the first letter of his surname in FamilySearch.org's "Colorado, County Marriages and State Indexes, 1862-2006," County Marriages, Sedgwick, 1866 - 1994, p. 263; and, in the same source, "Temple-Murphy, Sedgwick County, Marriage Report Record # 788, 19 Aug 1921." This got me thinking perhaps there were two Gordons, but one of them really never shows up anywhere else, and Gordon Tillman Temple seems to be the only one whose information fits all the census and marriage records.
