Minnie was married to Ford Slocum Barrett, who established the F.S. Barrett realty company in Spokane in 1894 -- still in operation today.
"It was in the fall of 1898 that we went to live in the home of G.W. Temple, who was soon after appointed to the position of postmaster of the Spokane office. This proved to be a happy move for us. The Temple family have remained the dearest of friends, us both all these years - over 30 years - a long time. Mr. Temple took the part of counselor for us and as long as he lived, we considered his advice and counsel with all sincerity and gratefulness."
"And so, after this visit of "Mother Barrett" to our house, we moved into the house of our dear friends. This winter proved to be one of the happiest and most interesting winters of our married life. Mr. Temple, being politically minded and a man of a big and sympathetic heart, one who loved young people, and very particularly did he love Ford [Barrett Jr.]. He loved him as a father and, as long as Mr. Temple lived, they were pals. Mr. Temple never had a son of his own and I always felt that he showered this love on Ford as he would have on his own son. He was "Uncle George" and she "Auntie Temple" to this family, and so they remained all these years. Dear "Auntie Temple" - she was a real helpmeet and into this wonderful household, Ford and I came as bride and groom. Auntie Temple was born in the south with that [an illegible line] Can you not see that that winter was outstanding for fun, happiness and good food? I sang in the choir and as the Temple family was Unitarian, all visiting Unitarian ministers as well as the local members were frequently entertained in this delightful household. It was like home to us. We felt as free to bring guests as we would were it our own home. One business associate coming one night with Ford enjoyed the genial hospitality of our hosts and, after repeated helpings of the splendid food, laughingly said when passing or asking for further service, "Seeing you insist, Mr. Temple, I will have some." And so it was that while in this loving household, we set out to buy a lot and build a home of our own."
"....during the summer of 1899, "Uncle George" decided to establish a camp on the banks of the Little Spokane River, Ford and I decided to go, too. Several times that summer, members of the choir, Mr. F.W. King - bass - and Mr. Juillian came out to that camp to see us. It was such fun. The spot is nearly a lost one now. A paved highway now lies along the bank of the pretty stream, where once we picked raspberries and pitched our tents for camp. The Francis Cook family owned the property, and it was from them we had permission to camp [where indeed?] Mr. Temple owned a splendid driving horse and he drove out Saturday nights, bringing Ford with him. This was a delightful experience. Fish in the little stream furnished many a breakfast as well as dinners, too"
"Once we had a visitor [while wintering at Coronado Beach, CA], Mrs. Temple came down from Los Angeles just to see us. This was a real treat. Xmas time came. Such a big box of gifts and goodies that came from home. I remember that Xmas eve [1907] as if it were but yesterday."
"June 19th, 1913, we left San Diego, stopped in Los Angeles and then out to Pomona to visit our good friends, Mr. and Mrs. Temple, who were living there at that time. Stayed four days, one of these was Mr. Temple's birthday, June 23rd, 1913, he was 65 years old. We had a wonderful birthday dinner, cake with candles and all, then they drove us to the station and we were on our way homeward"
"Mention has been made before of the very dear friends to this family, Mr. and Mrs. George Temple. From our earliest married years, when we lived with the family and Mr. Temple was postmaster, to the present time, that friendship has grown and strengthened. I mention that here, because the life which we were about to begin in Berkeley [fall 1913] was made much happier because these same friends lived in Oakland, probably two miles away. It was "Uncle George," lovingly called, who found us a comfortable house in which to live - a furnished house leased for the year. It was on Garber St. in Berkeley, and not far from the University and the markets."
"Returning to Spokane, after the school year, [1913] we visited Uncle George and Auntie Temple at Pomona, California on way north. We rented a furnished house for the summer at 14th Ave. next door to Loyd [Prillo?] house. On our way north, we stopped several days in Berkeley, Calif., looking over the situation for a possible residence for the coming year instead of going to San Diego. We liked it so much that in the fall, 1913, we went to this very interesting college center to live. It happened that Mr. & Mrs. G.W. Temple lived in Oakland and like the good friends they continued to be always, they took this little family unto themselves, making it as happy as possible without its "Daddy." .... The minister, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, took the children on several nice auto trips. Mr. & Mrs. Taylor, living in Berkeley but formerly Spokane, were occasional visitors. But it was to our dear friends, Mr. & Mrs. G.W. Temple, we owed much for continued interest and watchful care. It was more that of a father and mother case in [?] for us. They took us for long rides, invited us there for dinners (this of course we reciprocated), and in any possible way helped this little family adjust itself to the rather disheartening fact of having to be in California so much of the time without its "Daddy." "It was in this year - the spring vacation time - that Mr. Temple took us all to a mountain resort for a few days of this vacation. I remember it well; we had a tent beside a rushing stream and it was beautiful. The time of year being the springtime, the country was lovely with peach blossoms."
"During the Easter vacation, [1914] our good "Uncle George" and "Auntie Temple" took us down the country to a small inn, where we spent a couple of days."
"In the fall of 1921, Ford Jr. left for his four years of college at Dartmouth, Hanover, New Hampshire. The spring, in June, Lucille [Barrett, Minnie & Ford Sr.'s daughter] was to graduate [from Wellesley], and it had been long planned that I should be the one to go for this grand event. Mrs. Temple joined me for this trip. It was outstanding. It included a week in New York (my first visit to N.Y.), a weekend in Hanover, at the quaintest little inn in that place, and such a delightful experience in Wellesley."
