He served until expiration of his service and was discharged 27 Nov 1864 at Pegram House, VA. We also know of his service indirectly, since the story of his friend Leroy White, is recorded, and goes as follows:<p>"Thomas Leroy White had the honor of being the first volunteer in the state to enlist in the War of the Rebellion, enlisting in Keene, N. H., with the three months' men, and afterwards in the Sixth Regt. N. H. Vols. At one time, he had his cartridge bag shot into, which fell to the ground. At another time with a friend, George Henry Temple, while on the retreat from the second battle of Bull Run, a ball passed to the ground between them." George died on 29 December 1906 at the age of 69 in Wilton, Hillsborough, NH.<a href="sources.htm#23" class="lnk">23</a>,<a href="sources.htm#13969" class="lnk">13969</a>,<a href="sources.htm#98153" class="lnk">98153</a> Died of liver disease and a weak heart. Something is odd about his death date, in that there are no other candidates but reports vary greatly. Rise of the Temples says he died in 1893, which he did not. His death certificate says he died in Wilton, NH on 29 Dec 1906. However, he self-discharged himself from the Disabled Soldiers Home on 2 Jan 1907. Buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Keene, NH. It seems highly likely that George Henry Temple did not have all the wives presented. His records while admitted in the National Disabled Soldiers Home between 1901 and 1907 leave no room for interpretation that he claimed he was a widower; his next of kin he claimed initially was Mrs. Lizzie A. Comstock of Worcester, MA, who may have been his fourth cousin through Richard Temple, and who must have died before 1907, because she was stricken and Mrs. Allen M. Banks of 44 7th Avenue, Lowell, MA, replaced her. Since he was discharged voluntarily in 1907, he was quite alive, for at least some additional time, and did not appear to be married. That indicates that Carrie Sawyer and Etta Ellis may have been wives of some other George Temple. Also, they were in a different part of NH, when he claimed he was returning to Nashua, NH upon his discharge. His death certificate indicates he was a railroad employee, a fact not found elsewhere in the prior censuses, and died in Dec 1906, despite the withdrawal from the Soldiers' Home in 1907. While this seems to indicate there were two men of similar age and name, it may be that someone else took the action to close his accounts at the Home after he died in late December.
