When he was cited for heroism he was asked how he gathered that much courage, and replied, "I don't really know...kinda pretty piece of cloth, you know, couldn't see letting it get dirty down in that mud." He died before 1930 at the age of 65 in Togus, Kennebec, ME. The Disabled Soldiers Home never showed he was discharged, so he likely died there in Togus, ME. Tradition of family recalls he was known as "Gid" or "Diamond King." The latter sobriquet arising from his penchant for diamonds. "Gid" refers to his having been a dandy. He would horde what little money he could come across and buy diamonds, while pleading poverty. From a newspaper advertisement in June 1906, we know that he was then operating Temple's Island Park Restaurant in Winthrop, ME. The most popular story told about him was that he actually had a diamond mounted between his two front teeth. Possibly George Files Temple.<p>Although I find it unlikely, there were two George F.
