TEMPLE</b> served in the military between 1861 and 1865 in AR.<a href="sources.htm#96260" class="lnk">96260</a> Francis M. Temple was slightly wounded. The following is a description of the unit's action and the casualties:<p>MAJ. GEN. S. E. CURTIS, Commanding Department of the Missouri:<p>General: The following report of the battle of yesterday, at Fayetteville, is respectfully submitted, in addition to the telegraphic dispatches of last evening. On Friday, 17th inst., a scout under command of Lieut. Robb, First Arkansas Cavalry, returned from the direction of Ozark, and reported no apparent preparations of the enemy to move in this direction. Having no fresh horses I ordered Lieut. Robb to take his command to quarters, expecting to be able to send a small scout again on the next day. On Saturday morning, 18th inst., at a few minutes after sunrise, the enemy, having made a forced march from the Boston Mountains during the night, surprised and captured our dismounted picket, on Frog Bayou road. and approached the town with wild and deafening shouts. Their cavalry charged up a ravine on the east of the city, and attacked my headquarters (Col. Tibbett's place). The firing of the picket had alarmed the command, and by the time the enemy had reached town the First Arkansas Infantry had formed on their parade ground under command of Lieut.-Col. E. J. Searle, assisted by Maj. E. D. Ham, and slowly retired by my orders toward the cavalry, then formed, dismounted at their camp. Fearing that, not being uniformed, they might be mistaken for the enemy, and be fired upon by the cavalry, I ordered Lieut.-Col. Searle to post seven companies as a reserve, in a sheltered position in our rear, two of which were afterward ordered to support the left wing. The remaining three companies of the First Infantry. together with four companies of the First Cavalry, formed the center of our line, under my own immediate command. The right wing was composed of the Third Battalion. First Cavalry, under command of Maj. Ezra Fitch; and the left wing, Second Battalion (First Arkansas Cavalry), was commanded by Lieut.-Col. A. W. Bishop, assisted by Maj. T. J. Hunt. Headquarters was made the "bone of contention," and was repeatedly charged by the rebels, who were gallantly repulsed by our men. In less than thirty minutes after the first attack the enemy planted two pieces of artillery, one a twelve-pounder and one a six pounder, upon the hillside cast of town, near Col. Gunter's place, and opened a sharp fire of canister and shell upon the camp of the First Arkansas Cavalry, doing some damage to tents and horses, but killing no men. At 8 A. M. our center had advanced and occupied the house. yard, out-buildings and hedges of my headquarters; the right wing had advanced to the arsenal, and the left occupied the open field northeast of town, while the enemy had possession of the whole hillside east, the Davis place, opposite to, and the grove south of headquarters. This grove was formerly occupied by the buildings of Arkansas College. At about 9 A. M., or a little before, Col. Monroe led a gallant and desperate cavalry charge upon our right wing, which was met by a galling crossfire from our right and center, piling rebel men and horses in heaps in front of our ordnance office, and causing the enemy to retreat in disorder to the woods. During this charge Capts. Parker and Smith, of the First Infantry, while bravely cheering their men, were both wounded in the head, though not dangerously. At about the same time, by my order, two companies of the First Cavalry, led by the gallant Lieut. Robb, advanced within rifle range of the enemy's artillery, and, guided by the blaze of its discharges, fired several volleys into the midst of the artillerists, which effectually silenced their battery and caused its precipitate withdrawal from the field. The enemy's center, occupying the Davis place, made a desperate resistance for nearly an hour after both wings had partially given away, and skirmishing continued at intervals for some time with pickets, reconnoitering parties and stragglers. At 12 M. their whole force was in full retreat for Ozark. Having only a very few horses, and those already on duty with picketing and reconnoitering parties, I was utterly unable to pursue them. During the whole action the enemy occupied ground covered with timber and brush, while my command were in the streets and open fields.<br>Since the battle I have ascertained the following particulars: Gen. Cabell and staff, with about 2,000 men and two pieces of artillery, left Ozark on Friday morning with three days' rations and a full supply of ammunition. They halted at the crossing of the mountains a little past noon, and rested until nearly sunset, afterward marching rapidly toward Fayetteville. They were delayed by the darkness of the night and the encumbrance of their artillery, so that they did not commence the attack as early by nearly two hours as they had intended. Col. Monroe recommended a cavalry attack, to be supported by the artillery, but was overruled by Cabell, and a halt was made until the artillery could come up. Their force was made up as follows: Brig.-Gen. W. L. Cabell commanding, accompanied by staff and escort; Carroll's First Arkansas Cavalry Regiment, Col. Scott, of Virginia, commanding, assisted by Lieut.-Col. Thompson; Monroe's Second Arkansas Cavalry, Col. Monroe commanding in person; First Battalion Parson's Texas Cavalry, Lieut.-Col. Noble commanding; one section of artillery, commanding officer not known; four companies of bushwhackers, commanded by Mankins, Palmer, Brown and others. The enemy left all their dead and wounded, which they could not take away on their retreat, in our hands, leaving Surgeon Russell and Assist.-Surgeon Holderness to take charge of them. To-day Capt. Alexander arrived at our picket with a flag of truce, bringing a communication from Gen. Cabell, a copy of which I enclose. The flag was immediately ordered back with my reply, a copy of which is also enclosed. The following is a list of casualties on our side:<p>First Arkansas Cavalry: Killed-Privates H. Morris and J. D. Bell, Company I; R. B. Burrows, Company A. Wounded-Capt. W. S. Johnson, Company M, right arm, dangerously; Sergt. Frederick Kise, Company A, slightly; Sergt. Body shipped to Ames, IA. The History of Polk County listed the four children of John and Eliza (Day) Temple, of whom Frank was one, but the book was written in 1880, and said that Frank had been "lost." He apparently ran away from home. He did not know where his parents were from, except in 1920 when he gave IN (father) and IL (mother). The 1920 report was probably only a reflection of where they lived, and not where they were from. His location in Crocker, Polk, IA, puts him in proximity of the family of John and Tabitha (West) Temple, whose son Claude was in Crocker, making him the half brother of Francis M. Also known as Bird and White Island, it was purchased by California Governor John C. Fremont for $ 5,000, and batteries were under construction by 1854, but that is not the whole story. "The Bay of San Francisco : the metropolis of the Pacific Coast and its suburban cities: a history" described the sequence of events as follow:<br>"The island was granted in 1846 by Gov. Pio Pico to William Workman, who transferred it to F.P.F. Temple, who sold it to Fremont. It is understood that Fremont never paid the purchase money, and yet sold it to Palmer, Cook and Company. Temple sued Fremont for it. Palmer, Cook and Company sued the Government, but their claim was dismissed." This was reported in the Sacramento Union, 14 Feb 1856. The outcome of Don Francisco's suit is not known to me.<p>Jason Edward Temple, a grandson of Francis Pliny Fisk III, mentioned that he thought his grandfather's papers included the original deeds to Alcatraz, San Clemente Island, and Mission San Gabriel. In 1852 he was a farmer in Los Angeles Co., CA.<a href="sources.htm#96335" class="lnk">96335</a> In July 1860 Francis was a ranchero in El Monte, Los Angeles, CA.<a href="sources.htm#96339" class="lnk">96339</a> Between 1868 and 1871 he was a banker in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.<a href="sources.htm#96340" class="lnk">96340</a>,<a href="sources.htm#96341" class="lnk">96341</a> Together with his father-in-law William Workman and Isaias W. Hellman, opened the first bank in Los Angeles. The History of Downey explains that the partnership was largely held together by Hellman, who, though only 25, was the financial wizard behind the bank. It seems that "Temple was public spirited and easily taken in by wild-eyed dreamers and schemes with grandiose plans of development and money-making. Workman was more interested in developing his ranch at La Puente and took little concern in the bank. Hellman soon became uneasy with the relationship and in January of 1871, bought out his partners; and joined with John Downey. They organized under the title Farmers and Merchants Bank. It guided Southern California's economic development well down into the present century." See more on this bank under Don Francisco's next attempt at banking. In Jul 1866, he bought the north unit of the Fulton and Main Street block and the People's Market. He appeared in the census in 1870 in El Monte, Los Angeles, CA.<a href="sources.htm#96342" class="lnk">96342</a> Francis a traveler on the Overland Train in 1870 in Ogden, Weber, UT.<a href="sources.htm#96343" class="lnk">96343</a> Took the Overland Train from Ogden Utah, departing 20 Aug 1870 and arriving in Oakland, CA on 22 Aug 1870. Accompanied by W. Temple, who was most likely his son William. Between 1871 and 1876 he was a banker in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.<a href="sources.htm#96340" class="lnk">96340</a>,<a href="sources.htm#96341" class="lnk">96341</a> After dissolving his earlier bank, Temple and Workman started another on Temple Block in Los Angeles. However, Temple was apparently not a banker by inclination, and the bank failed. The History of Beverly Hills, although incorrectly confusing Don Francisco with his brother Don Juan, explained that unsecured loans were given to "sharpers," on the basis of character only. These obviously bad investments failed, and brought the bank down. There was an accusation that the bank manager was in collusion with the "sharpers," but the history gives nothing further on that.<p>In August, 1875, a run on the Bank of California led its president, William C. Ralston, to commit suicide when he could not cover the withdrawals. This led to suspicions about other banks that were involved with the Bank of California, among them Temple-Workman. In October 1875, every bank in California closed their doors. The first to reopen was Hellman's Farmer's and Merchants Bank, which had been the enterprise in which Temple and Workman had been partners. Temple-Workman did not reopen until December, based on a high interest loan from "Lucky" Baldwin, a Comstock millionaire. But the terms of the loan undermined confidence in the Temple-Workman bank. Within a month, he still had more outstanding bad loans, and the loan from Baldwin had been used up. On 12 Jan 1876, the doors were closed for the last time. When Workman's ranch was taken away as part of the closure, he shot himself. Temple suffered a paralytic stroke. He associated with the Los Angeles and Independence Railroad in 1874 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.<a href="sources.htm#96344" class="lnk">96344</a> Served briefly as President of the road, but turned this over to John P. Temple Street in LA is named for him.<p>Temple (Francis Pliny F.), 1841, native of Mass., who came on the Tasso at the age of 20, engaging in trade at Los Ang. with his brother John. iv. 279. Later he established a stock rancho at S. Emigdio, near Ft Tejon; was a member of the banking firm of Hellman, T., & Co. from '68, and from '72 of T. & Workman. He died in '80 at his rancho of La Merced. iv. 635; v. 320; leaving a widow-the daughter of Wm Workman-and several children. He took but slight part in politics, but was always prominent in business affairs. All his property was lost by the failure of the banking firm in '75. (His partner, Worden, committed suicide over the affair.)<p>This last write-up is a bit inaccurate. Temple went into business with his father-in-law, William Workman, and together they formed the Temple and Workman Bank in Los Angeles in 1871. The bank failed in the panic of 1875, causing both Temple and Workman to lose all their possessions. Workman subsequently committed suicide.<p>In the 1850 Census of California, he appears in Los Angeles using the name Francisco. He took the name after conversion to Catholicism in order to marry Antonia. His friends, however, called him "Templito" due to his short stature.<p>Jackson Graves recorded the following:<p>When the banking house of Temple Workman failed, in 1875, its owners borrowed $225,000 from E. J. Baldwin, of San Francisco, with interest at 1 1/4% per month, compounded monthly. Included in the mortgage were 40,000 acres of the Puente Rancho, owned by William Workman, the Temple Block at the junction of Temple, Spring and Main streets, a valuable piece of property on Spring Street, in Los Angeles, where the city hall is now being built, and a half interest in the Rancho Las Cienegas hereinbefore described. To accommodate his friend, F. P. F. Temple, of Temple Workman, Juan Mateo Sanchez included his three properties, the Merced, the Potrero Grande and the Felipe Lugo, in the mortgage. Workman committed suicide, Temple had a stroke of paralysis, lingered for a time, and died.<p>The Temple Workman Bank failed in September, 1875; opened for a time on money borrowed from E. J. Baldwin, and closed permanently in June, 1876.<p>Harris Newmark recalled of him:<p>Another citizen of Los Angeles who owned much property when I came, and who lived upon his ranch, was Francis Phinney Fisk Temple, one of the first Los Angeles supervisors, a man exceptionally modest and known among his Spanish-speaking friends as Templito, because of his five feet four stature. He came here, by way of the Horn, in 1841, when he was but nineteen years of age, and for a while was in business with his brother John. Marrying Senorita Antonia Margarita Workman, however, on September 30th, 1845, Francis made his home at La Merced Ranch, twelve miles east of Los Angeles, in the San Gabriel Valley, where he had a spacious and hospitable adobe after the old Spanish style, shaped something like a U, and about seventy by one hundred and ten feet in size. Around this house, later destroyed by fire, Temple planted twenty acres of fruit trees and fifty thousand or more vines, arranging the whole in a garden partly enclosed by a fence the exception rather than the rule for even a country nabob of that time. Templito also owned other ranches many miles in extent; but misfortune overtook him, and by the nineties his estate possessed scarcely a single acre of land in either the city or the county of Los Angeles; and he breathed his last in a rude sheep herder's camp in a corner of one of his famous properties.<p>More on him and his family can be found at the Southern California Vanguards website, http://www.homesteadmuseum.org/family/part1.htm.<p>The family ended up with quite a few land holdings in addition tot he ranchos mentioned. Research by Jason Edward Temple, <[email protected]>, grandson of Francis Pliny Fisk Temple III, indicated that the family (Thomas Edward Temple specifically) may still have the original deeds for the family's ownership of Alcatraz, San Clemente and Mission San Gabriel.
