A number of sources and researchers point to a third wife, Elizabeth Houghton, whom he may have married in 1785. They both seem to have died in 1789, she on 28 Feb 1789. This is on the strength of a gravestone in the Old Burial Ground in West Boylston. There, Betty Temple is commemorated as the wife of Ephraim Temple, and her death at 24 years of age is given on that date. The problem is that Ephraim's son Isaac also married Elizabeth Houghton, not all that common a name. Isaac's Elizabeth, however, had different dates, dying in 1789. I would consider this a mere confusion of a step mother as a spouse of a child - but Isaac's Elizabeth was the mother of several children and she died in 1819. So, I have recognized two Elizabeth Houghtons, possibly related but distinctly different women, because I cannot resolve this conflict any other reasonable way.
