Her birth date is confused with that of Elizabeth, daughter of Ichabod and Mary (Clark) Temple. Research by David Colton, <[email protected]>, explains the reasoning why the dates recorded in secondary sources are probably incorrect, and try to confuse the dates from her contemporary, the daughter of Reverend Ichabod Temple:<p>"Two distinct claims have been made about Betsy’s birth date. One is that she was the daughter of Ichabod Temple, a Baptist minister in the Bowdoin area. Maine Families in 1790, a usually-reliable source, published this claim (vol VI, p. 288), and gave a Bowdoin birthdate of June 10, 1789. This source claims that this Betsy Temple married Benjamin Whitmore. Bickford and Bartlett in their Early Bowdoin, Maine Families, p. 704, make similar claims. It is quite possible that Ichabod Temple had a daughter named Betsy, born in Bowdoin on June 10, 1789, but this probably was not the Betsy Temple who married Benjamin Whitmore. The gravestone of Benjamin Whitmore’s wife Betsy gives an age at death that points toward a birth date in 1790, and John Temple-II’s Revolutionary War Pension file (photo copies in Heritage Quest Rev War files) states that his daughter Betsy was born on May 23, 1790. The Levi Temple family genealogy also gives the 1790 birth date, although no source is given. Betsy’s date of death and age at death are inscribed on her gravestone at the Whitmore Family Cemetery between Richmond and Bowdoinham. Gravestone marking is reported in Downeast Ancestry VI (No. 3) October 1977, p. 13. Based on all of this, I believe that Betsy (Temple) Whitmore’s birth date is unrecorded in Bowdoin Vital Records, and that Ichabod Temple's daughter did not marry Benjamin Whitmore.
