If he is indeed the brother of Ichabod Temple, the Baptist minister, then he had to have immigrated prior to his military service. He did not appear in OH in 1820. Mentioned in Rise of the Temples only as the father of John and the rest of their line. As John was also said to be the nephew of Reverend Ichabod Temple (also in Rise of the Temples), Ebenezer was probably the brother of Ichabod, but this remains to be proved. If true, this may point to Ebenezer's parentage (the will of Richard Temple of Bowdoinham, ME in Sep 1783 may hold the key to that identification), and it may also point to his birthplace. If indeed he is the brother of Ichabod, then he was born in England, but this too needs proof. Some sources point to Ichabod, who, with Mary Clark, were the parents of Ebenezer Temple, b 1786 in ME. Because children cannot manage their own financial affairs, a financial guardian is appointed for them, or if they are old enough they can choose their own guardian. This is done even when the mother is still living. If the guardians had been appointed because the mother was dead, they would have been appointed at the same time and a guardian would also have been appointed for Samuel and Ebenezer's sister, Phebe." This explains in part why Hannah Gleason was still living, yet her children all chose guardians after their father's death. His Revolutionary War service was credited to Acton, MA (as was his brother Samuel's) and also to CT and NY. He was a private in Timothy Walker's Co. of militia, Col. Green's Regt. from Wilmington, MA, which marched on the alarm April 19, 1775. Service 5 ½ days. Joined Continental Army in July 1775, serving three months at Roxbury in the Siege of Boston under Col. Ebenezer Learned/Larned. Beginning Feb. 1776, went to Quebec to reinforce the army for three months. Benedict Arnold had a leadership role there. July 1776, joined Capt. Joel Dickinson's Co. of Col. Samuel Elmore's Regt. for six months and re-enlisted for another six months. This was a CT Regiment sent to protect the Mohawk Valley in NY. Soldiers from NY and MA joined it there. Sent to Fort Dayton and then to Ft. Stanwix/Schuyler, NY. Early 1777, joined Col. John Lamb's 2nd New York (later Continental) Artillery Regt. Was a matross in Capt. Lt. Joseph Savage's Detachment of Capt. Robert Walker's Co. Aug. 1777, among the 750 American soldiers who successfully defended Ft. Stanwix in a 21-day siege by the British, Hessians, Loyalists and Indians. Benedict Arnold rescued the fort. This victory at Ft. Stanwix helped to set up the American win at Saratoga, a turning point in the war. Some, but not all, of Col. Lamb's troops were at Valley Forge during the now famous winter of 1777-1778, but we can find no record of Ebenezer TEMPLE having been there. He most likely remained at Ft. Stanwix through Nov. 1778. Dec. 1778 through Aug. 1781, stationed in Danbury and Bethel, CT, and at Hudson River encampments: Newburgh, New Windsor and West Point. In 1779, company attached to Genl. Huntington's Brigade, Col. Nixon's Brigade and to the 1st PA Brigade. Member of Col. John Lamb's troops stationed in and around West Point on September 25, 1780, when Benedict Arnold failed in his attempt to turn it over to the British. Oct. 1781, fought in the eight-day Siege of Yorktown as a matross in Col. John Lamb's 2nd Regt. of Artillery. Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, the last major battle of the Revolutionary War. The men of Colonel Lamb's Artillery were recognized by General George Washington for their skill in this battle. 1781-1783, TEMPLE, stationed at Burlington Barracks, NJ, and West Point, NY, continued to serve -- now under Capt. Jacob Reed -- until a treaty was signed with the British. Company re-named 10th Company of Lamb's 2nd Continental Artillery. Ebenezer TEMPLE was honorably discharged in June 1783 at West Point by General George Washington.<p>Much of Ebenezer's war service was in NY, and he may have lived there for awhile after the war. Ebenezer's first child (Ira born 1786-87) states in the 1850 census that he was born in NY. There is no indication that Ebenezer lived on his NY bounty land. The war was over in 1783, but the bounty land didn't come through until 1790. Many soldiers got tired of waiting for the land and sold or assigned it. There is some confusion about his bounty land because one record shows that on 9 July 1790 Major Connolly received a patent (deed) for Ebenezer's bounty land, 600 acres: Lot 26, Twp 19, which was Homer, NY. Other records show Ebenezer's warrant # 78990 was assigned to Jacob Ferris on 9 April 1791, and he then sold it to Abel Owen on 13 May 1791. In 1803 there was a lawsuit "Abel OWEN and Roderick OWEN vs. Ebenezer TEMPLE and Martin KINGSLEY," with KINGSLEY contesting the title. The OWENs won the lawsuit. It is not clear if TEMPLE's name was on the suit because he originally owned the land or whether he was actually involved in the dispute.<p>Pension started 4 Apr 1818. Appeared in the 1820 Pension List in Vermont. In his sworn statement on his service, applying for his pension, Ebenezer explained his service and circumstances:<p>"I Ebenezer Temple of Woodford in the county of Bennington and State of Vermont Testify and say that inlisted [sic] in the service of the United States in the Revolutionary War in July AD 1775 in Colonel Larned Rigement [sic] served about three months, and in Feb AD 1776 I went to Quebec to reinforce the army for three months, and served my time out. However, in 1854, investigating what had happened to Ebenezer's pension after his death, the commissioner in the Pension Office said he had died 24 Nov 1847. A diary page from the Day Papers at the Bennington Museum Library in Bennington, VT, confirms the 24 Nov 1847 date. They went to Mitchell County and lived with James until their deaths.<p>Cecilia Barger, a descendant of Edwin Rollin Temple, provided the following insight on the Temple Cemetery: "The Temple Cemetery cemetery in Mitchell county that was originally on Temple land is now called Tucker cemetery. Mercy Temple is buried there and although back in those days they did not report burials and such and no known newspaper articles are known to exist - I believe Albert, and Ebenezer Temple Jr. are buried here.<p>"Note - the Temple cemetery that is on the plot of land that was the Temple families from 1855-1897 was called the Temple cemetery. On the surveyors map it is indicated as so dated 1875. This would mean that the family would have actively buried those who dwelled on the land who were of the family. It wasn't until 1898 that the land was foreclosed and went to another - possibly T.E. Tucker who was a good friend of Albert Temple and had land adjacen to him. This would also indicate the name of the cemetery going under Tucker Cemetery. Most burials were not reported therefore it would not be listed in any cemetery transcription log or books done by the genealogical society. There are no actual newspaper obits for Albert or Ebenezer and Stone was most likely provided by son for Mercy." Ebenezer has reference number RLT # 25Fi.<a href="sources.htm#33986" class="lnk">33986</a> The conclusion that he was the father of Albert Temple requires proof, which will be hard to come by. Ebenezer and his descendants had wanderlust, and the birthplaces of their children indicate that they moved on every couple of years or so, until the children reached Washington Territory, where they all stayed. I postulate a first wife for Ebenezer because he was married to Mary/Mercy Temple so late in life, and because it is almost certain that Albert, b 1806, was his son.
