The Army corrected Ruth's application to the start date of 12 Jul 1940, his date of enlistment at Fort Bragg, NC as a sergeant in the field artillery.<br>Admitted for treatment in Oct 1943 for joint disease, Dermatophytosis, and either atrophy or paralysis of his foot and muscle, considered an injury in the line of duty. At the time, his military branch was given as Military Police. He was treated and discharged in May 1944. Admitted to treatment for an ingrown nail (Unguis incarnatus) and Paronychia, in May 1944, treated and initially returned to duty. When readmitted in May 1944, he was said to have been discharged medically in May 1944, but apparently he returned to service. He served in Army Headquarters Command Detachment, 1852 SCU. <br>Whereas his widow said he was discharged 1 Nov 1942, the Army corrected that to indicate he retired on 31 Aug 1945 When he re-registered for the draft on 29 Apr 1946, he signed with his rank indicating he had been a master sergeant. Credited with 13 years of service in 1944, his final total was 16 years in the US Army in Aug 1945, but his discharge also noted he was eligible for a disability retirement with 20 years of honorable service. For pay purposes, he was credited with 21y1m19d. His final rank was master sergeant. Different sources give different service numbers - his Veteran's Headstone and his honorable discharge gave Service # 6350502, but his enlistment papers and medical records both gave Service # 06350502.
