Some research puts the place as Sandy Creek, Venango, PA. Buried in Old Sandy Cemetery, Polk, PA. Orphaned at an early age.
Clearly related to Robert and Margaret Salome (Jewel) Temple, possibly as a brother, based on his age. However, Robert's brother David was the wrong age, and married different women. So I can't yet figure out the relationship. The problem is compounded by David's burial in Sandy Creek Cemetery, Venango, PA, when Rise of the Temples seems to indicate he went to OH. It may be that the resolution to this is that the David in OH was a different David.
I had this family constructed on the basis of the information in Rise of the Temples for David Temple, credited in that book as the son of John Temple and Mary Gray. Rise of the Temples says he and his wife, Elizabeth Packer, moved to Delaware and Crawford Counties, OH. I found them in OH, and further found them in the History of Coles County, IL, and the History of Crawford County, OH. All well and good until I received the information that David Gray and his family appear on a large stone in the Sandy Creek Cemetery in Venango Co., PA. In fact, the family listed with David Gray Temple on that cemetery stone are the ones that I also found appearing in 1850 in Venango Co., PA.
In 1850, David, his wife Margaret, and sons John and Nelson, daughters Jane and Margaretta, all appear. In 1870, David, Margaret, Nelson and Margaret (formerly Margaretta) are still in Venango Co., though in French Creek. Quite clearly, they are not the same people described in the histories in IL and OH. The families are really very different, down to their dates and names, not just locations. So - clearly I cannot deny the census records, nor can I deny the record on the large stone in the cemetery. So who were the folks in OH? And how did they get so confused with the David Gray Temple who - it seems - clearly stayed put in Venango Co., PA?
To separate them, I have to figure out who the people in OH were. This is a tough job - as there are quite a number of descendants from the David and Elizabeth (Packer) Temple starting point. To complicate things, although David married Elizabeth Packer in 1822 in Richland Co., OH, by 1850, he was married to his second wife, Anna. But in 1860, the one in OH did not get enumerated.
There has GOT to be a close family affinity, I think. First - it was sufficiently close to cause ROT to confuse them. Second, the census records show that David in both cases came from PA. The one in OH in 1850 was born in 1795, while David Gray was clearly born in 1805 based on the cemetery stone.
I looked at Ralph Temple's book on Temples in the Census, and lo and behold - he had them designated as the same David, with one designated as # 117 (his number in ROT) and the other as 117 (new). So Ralph saw the confusion, but couldn't resolve it either.
I fear that I have to do some major surgery on the line from David Gray. I think that key to resolving this is the designation of David, in Rise of the Temples, as son of John3, John2, Thomas1, as David Gray. It is most attractive to link David Gray to the line from Mary Gray - but nothing else seems to fit. But I must admit - I am stumped. I suspect that the David portrayed here in OH was NOT David Gray Temple, but some closely related David Temple.
Not clear that his middle name is Gray.
Clearly related to Robert and Margaret Salome (Jewel) Temple, possibly as a brother, based on his age.
