From 1956 to 1968 he was a member of (then) 18 Medical Company, Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in Winnipeg, retiring as Deputy Commanding Officer of the unit, with the rank of Major. In 1972 he was appointed to the Senate of 18 (Thunder Bay) Service Battalion, and appointed to the position of Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel of the unit in 1985 and Honorary Colonel in 1994. He has been awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration and Clasp, Canadian Voluntary Service Medal and Victory Medal."
