At that time there Indians a plenty, buffalo, cattle by the thousands, most kinds of small game. Father's sister, Sarah, who lived in Kansas died. So they decided to go back to Kansas where they stayed until 1881. Loaded the wagons, known as Prarie Schooners. Father, Daniel Smith Avery, his brother William and William's brother-in-law Joe Cane and family, with 2 children. All with covered wagons. We were on the road from 1st of November until about Jan.6, 1882. Old Buffalo Gap was the county seat at that time. No roads. Neighbors were few and far between, but what few there were, were real neighbors. The country all outside, no fences, a real cow country at that time, lots of deer, antelope, turkey, wild hogs and most all kinds of small game. A few panthers, wild cats, fox, lobo and prairie wolves. No railroad nearer than Fort Worth; all freight was hauled by wagons."
