I wonder of the transcription of his gravestone was misread, and was 11 May and not 11 Mar. Name given as Burdette C. in the 1900 census. Claimed he and his parents were all from OH in 1910.<p>This family is a bit of a problem. In 1910, two Dora Temples were enumerated in MN. One was married to Burdette, who was quite alive when enumerated on 7 May 1910, and who had had 5 children, only one of whom was a Temple, and who was clearly Charles R. Temple in the 1910 and subsequent censuses. The other Dora had an occupation as a restaurant proprietor in 1910, while Burdette's wife claimed no occupation. Their parents were from different places. The Dora in Spring Valley had had only 1 child, was widowed and was living with her mother, Augusta Laging and her unmarried sister Rose. Some researchers have attempted to combine these two families, but that is on the basis of the proximity of Dora of Spring Valley to Christopher Temple, Burdette's father, who was also in Spring Valley in 1910. However, Dora of Spring Valley could not be the wife of Burdette. her dead husband might be related to Christopher, but not as a son. Served as a private in Company M, 342nd Infantry, 86th Division. He was therefore probably assigned to Camp Grant in IL. From there, he entrained for Camp Mills on Long Island on 13 Aug 1918. Camp Mills was a US Army Training and Embarkation Camp first established in 1917 near Garden City, Nassau, NY. Abandoned as an active post in 1920, it was later absorbed into Mitchel Field.<p>As a private, departed New York aboard the Minnekahda for France on 9 Sep 1918. Apparently, the 86th, and with it the 342nd Infantry, docked first at Liverpool as an intermediate destination. At about this time, the Spanish Flu epidemic hit the Division, but no figures were found on casualties. Next, they were taken to Cherbourg, and hiked to a camp at Toulville, France. The 342nd Infantry scattered over an area embracing the towns of Lugon, Cubzac-les-Ponts, St. Romain and Cadillac. It is not clear what combat the unit saw. After the Armistice, the men of the 341st and 342nd Infantry Regiments were formed into the Third Provisional Regiment under command of Lieutenant Colonel Coleman and Major Sprague of the 341st. The newly consolidated outfits left Le Mans the evening of November 13 for station at Montfort and Pont de Gennes, about eighteen miles distant. The 86th Division was deactivated in Jan 1919, whereupon he was reassigned to Company B, 353rd Infantry.<p>It appears Burnice Temple was originally scheduled to return aboard the Archimedes, but for whatever reason, he did not. He departed Brest aboard the Leviathan on 15 May 1919, bound for Hoboken, arriving there 22 May 1919.<br>His service number was 2,074,350. Not clear what the discrepancy is. One conjecture is that the earlier date was actually the marriage of Polly Simmons Adkins to Burwell Senior, and that the later date is a marriage between Burwell Jr. and Polly Simmons.<p>He may have had a son, David. In 1780, two Temples, about the same age, enlisted at Chesterfield, VA. One was Herbert, Burwell's son, and the other was David, about three years older. He involved in debt lawsuit on 7 January 1814 in Williamson Co., TN.<a href="sources.htm#85332" class="lnk">85332</a> He and Thomas S. Adkins were involved in a lawsuit over a debt. The relationship to Polly Adkins is unclear, but possibly a brother or her father. Burwell died after 1839 at the age of 67.<a href="sources.htm#81840" class="lnk">81840</a> Assignment of his children, other than Mary, is based on a comparison of Williamson County, TN marriages from 1816 to 1844, the associated birth dates estimated therefrom for the Temples, and the census records for Burwell. Joyce Temple Barnett put together a list of 8 potential slots for children based on the census records, but allowed for additional children, while not assigning any names. The two males that are unidentified are therefore in the census records, but otherwise unidentifiable.<p>Joyce Temple Barnett believed that Herbert was a son of Burwell and Polly Temple. This is only possible if he was the male in the 1820 census age 0-10, and that would mean Lewallen would fit in the 1804-1810 timeframe, and towards the latter end of that. I had estimated, based on the date of his marriage, that Lewallen was born about 1812, but perhaps instead of being 21 he was 23 or so.<p>I have added Sarah Jane Temple, but as with all of these other than Mary, the relationship needs to be proved. Not clear what the discrepancy is. One conjecture is that the earlier date was actually the marriage of Polly Simmons Adkins to Burwell Senior, and that the later date is a marriage between Burwell Jr. and Polly Simmons. Joyce Temple Barnett offered that one date was when they got the license, but that they did not actually marry until 1798. The latter argument seems more likely.
