The file was compiled by Mr. Horace Rudisill, Director from 1965-early 70s and Research Consultant early 70s until his death, 15 July 2003. In particular, he sold "slaves Dicy, Cary, Simon and Gib to James BOSTICK for $800.00, 29 Oct 1806." Again, he sold "a slave Richmond to James BOSTICK for $400.00 24 July 1807." By 3 April 1818, Cynthia TEMPLES is administratrix of all and Singular the goods and chattels, rights and credits of Austin TEMPLES; HERRING, Jesse Surety; SCAFFE, Isaac, Surety.
And, on 3 April 1818, George BRUCE charges James SANSBURY, Henry HEAGUWOOD, William SLOAN, and Absalom SANSBURY to "view and appraise all and every the said goods and chattels, being first duly sworn on the Holy Evangelists of Almighty God to make a true and perfect Inventory and appraisement thereof, and to cause the same to be returned under your hands, or any three or four of you, unto the said Cynthia TEMPLES, Admt."
The sale of his estate took place on 29 Jun 1818. Name appears variously as Augustine, Augustain, and Austin. Joyce Temple Barnett considered he was possibly a son of Burwell Temple, Sr., b 1735-1740. She realized he may have been named after the minister, Augustine Heath, who married Burwell and Polly Adkins. The problem with this conjecture is that Burwell b 1735 is probably not the one who married Polly Adkins, the latter being his son Burwell, Jr., b 1772. The Burwell-Polly marriage was documented in Sussex Co., VA in 1798, far too late for Burwell, Sr. Research by Patty Dowdy indicates, based on his age range in the 1800 census, he was probably not the son of Burwell Temple, and therefore not the brother of Herber (from whom he borrowed 4 pounds for a mare and a colt on 5 Jul 1790). This also means that the conjecture of his being named for the Reverend Augustine Heath is more coincidence than it is a fact, as the name was not all that rare.
Extensive archival research by Pat Dowdy led her to conclude: "the present TEMPLE families in Darlington and Florence Counties, SC, are related to a John R. TEMPLE (1851-1918), who moved from PA to SC; and no trace seems to exist of Austin TEMPLES' descendants." His grave marker gives his middle name as Alvin.
Laurel Wanrow provided the following:
Gus was born in a pioneer town called Franklin, which later became known as Puyallup. His parents were one of the early pioneer families to settle in the Puyallup Valley. Nearly 15 years later, Gus himself was old enough to help his family homestead yet another area of Washington Territory:
. . . March 27, 1885, H.C. Temple (my father) and myself (Gus A. Temple), then a boy 14 years old, a pony, and a big black dog, left our home in Puyallup bound for the new homestead in Davis Lake valley, then the wilds of Eastern Lewis county. We had one pony which we both took turns riding until we arrived in Chehalis, where provisions and other supplies were purchased and packed on the pony and again set foot. We headed for the Davis Lake country by way of the Tildon river valley. Two days later we took the first pony around the Bear Canyon and from there on up the valley. We had to cut a trail to get the pony through, three days of cutting trail and we arrived at the homestead on April 1, 1885, having brought the first horse in over the Bear Canyon route.
A year later in 1886, 16 year old Gus moved with his family to the new homestead, three miles east of the present site of Morton.
In 1898 Gus filed for his own place with Homestead Certificate No. 4025. It was registered at the Land Office at Vancouver, Washington and describes it as South half of the South East quarter of Section two in Township twelve North of Range four East of Willamette Meridian in Washington, containing eighty acres. It is dated the eleventh day of November, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety-eight, and of the Independence of the United States the one hundred and twenty-third. President William McKinley authorized it; it is actually signed by the Recorder of the General Land Office. His place is the Melvin Forrest Place now.
Gus married Tillie Agnes Bloomstrom in1900. Tillie had worked making fancy hats in a hat shop in Los Angeles, CA. They settled in Morton, WA and had three children. Tillie became ill with tuberculosis and they travelled via his father's covered wagon to Mew Mexico for her health in 1908 and one other time. Tillie was a good shot and killed their game on the trips. Tillie died in 1910.
Gus married Zaidee Mildred McFarland in 1912. They settled in Morton and had two more children.
Gus was a lather and had a farm on his homestead. He built the house and barn and later built another bigger house for his growing family. Gus and Zaidee lived for a time in the late 1950's in Puyallup. After Gus died Zaidee lived in a nursing home in Tacoma until her death.
His grave marker makes his middle name Alvin. It is curious that Lewis Co., WA, mortuary records also have a Gust Temple b 1871 who died in 1898, and about whom nothing more is known. Augustus was also known as Euclid.54959,83391 Died of a lingering illness due to an attack of Bright's Disease. The history of Arkansas County, Colorado, referred to him only as A.V. Temple, but gave the following fascinating glimpse of him:
In the spring of 1873, one of the arrivals was "...'our own' A.V. Temple, latest from Nevada, the scientific oracle of the camp. He was a young man of unusual attainments and alarming experiences. He had been educated at Columbia School of Mines, NY; had edited a Democratic newspaper in New Jersey; had surveyed a portion of the line of the Central Pacific Railroad, and managed the Candelaria Mine in Old Mexico long enough to use up the company funds, and a kindly freak of fortune induced him to accompany V.B. Hoyt from San Francisco to Colorado. 'Euclid,' as he was soon nicknamed, had a Shakespearean intellect, and could pan out the few grains of gold from the black sand of the arguments of old philosophers, and drop the concentrated wisdom of the ages in gentle showers on his hearers' heads. The camp would have backed him to the last prospect hole against Prof. Tyndal on heat. Proctor on astronomy, or Homer's ghost in description of Mexican customs, and Spinoza, James Stuart Mill, or even Herbert Spencer, couldn't hold a candle to him in metaphysics. Discussion was his forte, hunting his amusement, and any kind of work 'his pet aversion.' He made assays for us in those early days, and when he was disturbed by a piece of 'improbable' rock, he analyzed it by the cold-dry process, making the chemical re-actions with a lead pencil, and charging $2 for the result on a printed certificate. He lived with us for two yeas, and we both admired and felt proud of him to the last, when the place became too monotonous and 'rushing' for him, and he followed his inclinations back to the lad of the cactus, the centipede, the senorita, the siesta, the mozo, and of 'Poco tiempo.'"
His obituary said he had been in Mexico for 40 years and at the time of his death was an official of the National Railways as well as a man on intimate terms with the leading men of the nation.
