Amos Temple signed on for the duration of the war as a Private in the Eighth Company of the CT Line, 1783, under Captain Rogers. Other information shows Amos enlisting 9 Jun 1783 in Munson's Company. Amos Temple listed as belonging to New Britton as a private of the Eighth Company, in the return of 1779; Amos Temple listed as ae 21, 5'6", born in Stratford, residing in Stratford, with a copper complexion and black hair and black eyes, enlisting Jun 1777 for the duration, at Stratford; Amos, still a private, was last mustered 26 Jan 1783, and furloughed 3 Mar 1783. There are very few alternatives for Amos' identity. In fact, only two Amos Temples are known to have been born prior to the Revolution. Neither was associated with CT. However, Amos, b 1757, son of Joseph and Mary (Laughton) Temple, may be this person. Not much is known about Joseph and Mary's locations during their lifetimes, but we do know that they started in MA and ended up in VT. It may well be that their son Amos, though said to be from MA, was actually born in Stratford, CT. The only other known candidate was Amos, son of Benjamin and Hannah Temple, of Stow, MA and later Heath, MA. However, he is probably not the right person not only because of his lack of having been in CT, but he was b 1747. Therefore, the Amos who served in the CT line in 1782-1783, was most likely the former, who never married.</p><p><hr><a name="P191"></a><b>Amos TEMPLE</b><a href="sources.htm#79915" class="lnk">79915</a> was born on 6 June 1757 in Worcester, Worcester, MA. Never married. Gould, and Albert Temple gives her name as Francis Gould. The Vital Records of Charlestown, MA, gives her name as Francis K. Gould, from Brookline. In the last case, however, the Charleston records have her married to James Temple of Winchester, NH. Research by Margaret Behnke uncovered the marriage records in Leverett, Franklin, MA, give Amos Temple of Deerfield marrying Mary D. Torry of Leverett on 8 Apr 1841, in the Baptist Church. The Vital Records of Brookline give Amos of Winchester, NH and Francis R. Gould of Brookline filing their intention on 4 Apr 1841 in Brookline. The Vital Records of Deerfield give Amos filing an intention to marry Mary D. Torrey of Leverett on 25 Mar 1841.
