Ralph wrote that "I just ran across some of my old notes and am quite sure I have identified Capt. Alonzo Temple. b. Nov. 19, 1797. It looks as if Alonzo is not actually a Temple. According to a book I copied from a few years ago, Willard Savage of Needham MA changed his name to Alonzo Temple on Feb 18, 1822. The book I believe is titled "Name Changes in Massachusetts 1780-1892."<p>As if to support Ralph Temple's theory, The History of Spencer, MA, which seems very dependable, gives a biography of Col. Alonzo Temple, and interestingly, does not give one word about his ancestry. Alonzo has reference number RLT # U1.<sup><a href="sources.htm#4848" class="lnk">4848</a></sup> He was elected as Selectman and Assessor in Spencer, Worcester, MA.<sup><a href="sources.htm#81385" class="lnk">81385</a></sup> He was also known as Willard Savage.<sup><a href="sources.htm#81385" class="lnk">81385</a></sup> He was a prominent mill owner, along with other endeavors, in a time when an artisan's work day was from "sun to sun." During his working lifetime, however, the 10 hour work day was passed by the MA legislature, and Alonzo Temple was often heard to proclaim his guilt at returning home while the sun was still up. Alonzo Robert and Alonzo Franklin Temple were third cousins (common ancestor Jesse Temple), born about 6 years apart, and some of their data may be confused. For instance, both were in Graham, IN, in the 1920 census. Of particular concern is Alonzo Robert Temple's marriage to Bernice Richardson, which was verified on the death certificate of their son Donald E. Temple, but which seems to have occurred too early for Alonzo Robert Temple. I am concerned that the wives and children of these men are reversed, starting with the 1930 census. A further examination muddies things a bit, since Monroe's brother Christopher married Mary Jones, and Alpha was enumerated in the household of P. She went by Allie prior to her marriage (as in the 1900 census), but was known in marriage records as Nevada, but then appeared as Alta in 1920.
