Camp Merritt was a transshipment site, feeding troops into Hoboken for sailing to France. It was also hit badly by the 1918 influenza epidemic, which began in Sep 1918. It may be that Alex caught the flu and was not shipped out with the rest of the Battalion, and kept at the hospital in Camp Merritt. His service number was 4018537. Nothing else was available in the records to identify Alex's family, except that his next of kin was a Miss Susie Franklin, 718 9th Street, Richmond, VA.
