J. Teeters of Ellwood City, following their arrest at Ellwood. It is claimed that they had been stopping at a hotel. Both are said to be married.
It is claimed that Mrs. Batzel, Ely and Mrs. Ella Temple, wife of the murdered man, were found loitering at the Harmony station in Elwood City by Special Officer W.E. Knalley. They were taken to the office of Justice of the Peace S.Y. Douds for questioning. They are said to have admitted knowledge of the murder.
State Police Officers, White and Richards were notified at Beaver Falls and came to Ellwood and also questioned the trio. They found that Ely was not connected with the murder, but further discovered they say, that Ely and Mrs. Batzel had registered at the Imperial hotel as man and wife. The couple were held on charges as a result of this discovery and committed to the Lawrence County jail.
Mrs. Temple, it is said, was in the automobile with the men when her husband tried to get his sister, Mrs. Batzel, not to go on the joyride. She told the state police that a man named Sully, later identified as Solomon Rutkin, a poolroom proprietor of Pittsburgh, was the man who drove the party, including the women and male companions, from Pittsburgh, where they were traced to South Hills and later back to Pittsburgh.
Rutkin was arrested. He denied any knowledge of the shooting, saying that he did not know where Aliquippa is located. Later he admitted driving the car. Rutkin admitted that two men known as Pete and Patsy did the shooting that resulted in the death of Temple. No trace of them has been found by police. Rutkin is being held as a witness. It was claimed on the morning of the shooting that a man named “Pete” had fired the shot which killed Temple. At the same time another shot was fired which wounded Harry Crain, a friend of Temple, the bullet lodging in his hand. The women are also being held as witnesses.
