He was one of a thousand men who mustered on Dedham Plain, 9 Dec 1675, and marched for Narragansett Fort, the stronghold of King Philip, situated on an island in a swamp in what is now South Kingston, RI. The battle was known as the Swamp Fight. Abraham was wounded in the attack on the fort. 24 June 1675, he received 2 pounds and two shillings for earlier services in the same war. In 1735, he, among others, received a grant of land (known as a Narragansett grant) as a recognition of services rendered the Commonwealth in King Philip's War. He received a wound in the attack on a Narragansett fort, in which 4 of Captain Nathaniel Davenport's company were killed, and 11 wounded. Buried in Old Burying Ground, Nashoba Hill, Concord, MA. Ralph Temple visited Anne Gjeltema and Roger E. Temple and saw this gravestone on September 11th, 1995 and it was standing and in good shape. The Temple plot is on the hillside overlooking Concord Square. Charlotte Holbrook reported the inscription as "Here lyes buried y body of Mr. Abraham Temple who died Jan. 4, 1738 aged 86 years 7 months."<p>I should note, as I have under Abraham's son Richard, that the designation of the cemeteries here is inconsistent and possibly wrong. Some undocumented Internet sources say that some Temples who were early residents of Concord, MA, are buried at the Old Burying Grounds in Nashoba Hill, once called Concord Village (current day Littleton). However, there is no documentation for this information, and that cemetery was several miles away from Concord (once known as the village of Concord). The Nashoba Hill cemetery is no longer in existence, and its location is presently unknown. The Concord cemetery where the earliest Temple residents were actually buried is called the Old Hill Burying Grounds. It is right in the middle of current day Concord, MA, just behind the traffic circle with a tall flagpole. The Temple tombstones are still readable today. The Concord Free Public Library has a book entitle "Old Burying Grounds of Concord" compiled by Marian Wheeler. It identifies the location of the various graves and has maps to help you find them. For this summary, I am indebted to Sally Eaton. 3 Jan 1689, Abraham, Richard and Isaac are mentioned in the town records as "freeholders but not freeman, " not being members of the Church. They were, however, made freeman by the General Court in Boston, 21 March 1690. Real estate conveyances, recorded at East Cambridge, MA, indicate he was a man of considerable means. He died 28 Jan 1743. His estate was not administered on until 18 years after he died, and then amounted only to $375. The following inventory of Abraham's estate was returned 30 Dec 1756: Money due to the estate, a dark mare, a saddle and bridle, one fat ox, one yoke of oxen, six steers and four cows, two heifers and three fat swine, four small swine and three house ladders, five old axes, two plows, two broad hoes, fodder in both barns, eight seven bushels of Indian corn and rye, fifteen bushels of oats and ten bushel of beans, a cart and wheels, an ox yoke and irons, one chain, a retie line, three lengths and tacklings, three old saws, fourteen harrow teeth, a file, square and broad, old iron, a half bushel, adz, hammer and two sickles, fine lock, plain iron beetle, rings and wedges, six barrels of cider and old casks, salted beef, fresh beef and cow hide, a drag and iron pins, a grindstone, and iron crow, a tunnel, two black sheep skins, cloth for a coat and hat; an old blue coat, a pair of leather "bricks" (breeches) and two shirts, a pair of shoes, an ox yoke for one ox, one pair of stockings and one book, a cloth colored coat and jacket, one hay fork and a shovel, about three acres of upland and meadow. Abraham was buried in the old "hill burying ground," in the village of Concord. His tombstone was still standing in August 1897, and the inscription was as distinct as when first cut. His will was dated 2 Sep 1736, (and therefore some research places his death date in 1736), but it not proved till 24 Jan 1754. Probate court handed his estate over to an administrator in Concord, MA in 1756. Buried in First Presbyterian Church of Ewing Cemetery, Ewing, NJ. Rise of the Temples incorrectly assigns his issue to his two wives. According to his will, dated 2 Sep 1736, only Return and Timothy were underage at his death. Abraham and Benjamin were the senior male issue, and named as his executors. This does not agree with a book on the genealogies of Trenton/Ewing, NJ, families, which assigned (1) Abraham, (2) Benjamin, (3) Timothy and (4) Elizabeth to Phebe; and (5) Return and (6) Joanna to Rebecca. This last assignment also does not conform to the marriage dates assigned for Abraham's two wives, so it is possible that the children are not correctly assigned. Phoebe, who outlived Abraham, had on her grave marker that she had been Abraham's wife for 53 years, which eliminates the marriage to Rebecca altogether. This farm he sold to his brother, Truman, in 1871 and Abram then moved to South Granville, to the second house just east of the four corners, up the hill on the south side of the West Pawlet Road. From 1874 to 1880 they lived on a farm in North Hebron, directly across from the church, later owned by Henry Welch and now his daughter, Mrs. Mabel Irwin. In 1880 they moved to Granville, buying the Dillingham farm on Quaker Street, just opposite the later home of his brother, Luther. He erected his house there which has been the family home ever since.<p>About that time he became a partner of Solon Mason in the grocery business, just east of the railroad tracks on Granville's main street, and continued for many years. He subdivided his farm and built and sold many of the houses which are located west of Quaker Street. The site of the Baptist Church and the parked triangle in front of it are part of his original farm. When the Granville National Bank was organized in 1875 he became the Director. Also with him were 3 females under 21 and 1 over 21 who I assume to be his wife. They had 5 slaves. He purchaser of land parcels on 27 March 1855 in Newton Co., MS.<a href="sources.htm#79965" class="lnk">79965</a> Absolem was given both as Absolom T. and Absolom F Temples, but he was the same person buying several parcels of land on 27 Mar 1855. He bought on the same date as William A. Temples, who I take to be his son. It looks like Absolem paid a total of $39.96 for 79.92 acres described as N-1/2 SE-1/4, from a Choctaw named No-ne-cen-tubbe. On 11 Aug 1856, he apparently sold the same land to the Southern Railroad. Absolem purchaser of 116.33 acres on 14 April 1856 in Newton Co., MS.<a href="sources.htm#79966" class="lnk">79966</a> The cost was not recorded, but his land was a portion of 637.52 acres of Section 23, Township 6, Range 12. He used Military Land Warrant # 47977 in purchasing the land. Such warrants were generally to reward service in the War of 1812. It is not clear what, if anything, Absolom could have done at the age of 8, but he apparently had a warrant. In July 1860 he was a farmer in Hickory, Newton, MS.<a href="sources.htm#1982" class="lnk">1982</a> He died. Absolem has reference number RLT # U2548.<a href="sources.htm#52322" class="lnk">52322</a> Probably had many more children than shown, but records are difficult to track.
