As a mark of the latter's accuracy, it lists the full names and dates of several items not even found in the earlier history, such as the first daughter of Peter and Eleanor Aller (Hannah Maria). Although he went by Elmer, he appeared in 1920 as Joseph.<p>Pat Dowdey recalled two stories about her grandfather:<br>"Grandpa was quite a teaser, a trait that his sons inherited. For example, later in their marriage, he told people that he had decided to trade his wife in for two twenties; but he found out that he wasn't wired for two twenties! Grandpa also told the story that when he was courting Grandma and they were in Lone Jack, one of the Younger Brothers (either Cole or James) would say, "Elmer, who is that pretty thing on your arm?" By the time I came on the scene in the 1940s, she was very heavy set; and I hardly ever saw Grandma get up out of her chair. Perhaps that was a result of having nine children. She was a talkative person, who made me feel important by always putting the names of her visitors in the Lees Summit Journal.<p>"Another story, which took place before Grandpa's marriage to Grandma, pertained to his being hired as a worker in the fields. Apparently, they labored from 4 a.m. until midnight. One morning he came down to breakfast with his bags packed. The owner of the farm said, "Elmer, what is the matter? " Grandpa replied, "This was advertised as a full time job, and I don't have anything to do between midnight and 4 a.m.!" When young, he earned money by singing at pie suppers and became known as "The Tennessee Gulley Jumper."
