Fred was not in WW II because he had had a kidney removed. During the war, their home was open to many friends and relatives who were in California for the service, or were passing through. In 1948, they decided to leave San Francisco because they felt that a large city was not the place to raise two children. They left California and ended up in Puyallup, Washington. They lived there one year, and took off, looking for another place to live. They went to Spokane, Washington, liked the city, and settled down there. Fred first worked in a paint factory, and later went to work for Williams Brothers Neon Sign Co. where he made the first "time and temperature" sign.
