Other oral tradition gives the alternative of Sklorman, though the meaning of this name is not clear.<p>Oral history says he took name of his wife (to hide from authorities). Writing in the book "Bombshell," Joseph Albright and Marcia Kunstel provide a brief but cogent explanation of the reason for the immigration of the Friedman/Scholman family. On page 11, we find, "Czar Alexander III had been a furious anti-Semite who ignited pogroms across southern Russia and then imposed new restrictions against the Jews who had been victimized. This oppression was set off by the assassination attempt in March 1881 of Alexander II, who had permitted a period of relative liberalism. By early 1891, it was all but impossible for the more than five million Jews in the empire to live anywhere except the Pale of Settlement, the swatch of land from the Baltic to the Black Sea where nearly 95 percent of Russian Jewry had become corralled over the centuries. For the rest of that year, it scarcely rained, and Russia suffered its worst crop failure in more than forty years. Famine was inevitable."<p>Family lore about his history is a mixture of partial stories, as his son Charlie never spoke of such things. The lore is that Julius was trying to escape either a draft into the Czar's army, or a pogrom in Russia. He fled to Lithuania, to a shtetl named Shavel, which is modern Siauliai. There, he was taken in by a family which had only daughters. The rules at the time, so the story goes, was that a sole son in a family was not to be inducted into the army - so he was protected. That story works for the draft-evasion story line, except for his age in the mid- to late-1880s, but not the pogrom, as he would have fled from Russia to a Jewish community and Jewish family in Lithuania. The pogrom, and there is no doubt that there were many pogroms, may not have reached Lithuania at the time, so he could hide there with relative safety. However, by about 1891, the situation had deteriorated and they fled to the US.<p>Surname given as Friedman in 1900, and he is buried with that surname.<p>Immigration for the family is also curious. While shipping records have them coming together, the 1900 census says that Junius and his daughter Jennie came over in 1891, and the rest of the family came over in 1892.
