She came to her mother-in-law's home in Oklahoma City. Her daughter, Maria, was born Nov. 27, 1946. Her husband abandoned her and the baby a few months later. She had to stay with her mother-in-law who treated her like a slave. She got a job washing dishes at St. Anthony's Catholic Hospital with little knowledge of English. She was very popular and was soon promoted to nurse's aide on the obstetrics floor. One of the nuns suggested she would make more money working as a waitress in a new upscale Italian restaurant that had just opened in Oklahoma City. The owner agreed to let her work during her vacation week to see if her English was good enough and if she could do the job. In less than a year she was head waitress in charge of eight waitresses. It was at that restaurant that she met her present husband, John M. "Jack" Temple, and they were married on Jan. 17, 1954. A son, John R. "Ricky" was born on June 3, 1955. Her husband, Jack, went to work as a telecommunications engineer for a pipeline construction company and they traveled in several states for four years, then settled in Baton Rouge. When her husband went to work in Argentina in 1960, she went to work as head waitress at Leon's Italian Kitchen, a popular Italian restaurant in Baton Rouge. In 1963, the family moved to Argentina for a year. Upon returning from Argentina, she returned to work at Leon's while her husband operated his own telecommunications business in Argentina until 1966, coming home every few months. After the restaurant owner died, she later re-leased the restaurant when the owner's wife retired. She ran the restaurant successfully for a few years until the decline of the neighborhood and a serious medical operation forced her to close the restaurant and retire. She was then able to travel with her husband to 17 countries after he went to work with an international oil company.
