(Temple) Mix, "Five Generations of Jamiesons and Temples 1840-1950," p. 5, which related the following about her girls (names in brackets added by Cynthia for clarity):<p>" ...Our grandmother Temple [Martha Lyon] died in Vermont. Grandfather [Othniel Temple] came to Michigan, most of his brothers and sister eventually moved there also. He bought a farm two miles south of the Wayne County Farm. In a few years he married a younger woman and they had two little girls. When they were three and five years old their mother died and left grandfather with the two small children. Father [Albert A. Temple] and mother [Mary Garrigan] decided to move to their home to help care for them. They worked both farms together. It was better for us children because we did not have far to go to school from there.<br>"About a year later both of the little girls were taken sick with Black Diphtheria and both died. It was in the dead of winter and the snow was very deep. They had to shovel a road to the cemetery. Both were buried in the same grave. Father took the team and __ed to go to town and buy the caskets. Mother prepared them for burial. No one would come into the house. The minister stood on the porch and said a prayer for them. If that is so, then it may well be that she is the mother of the young children divided between Josiah and John H. in the 1870 census. Furthermore, I believe her surname to be Smith. Living next door to her in 1870 was a widow, Susanna Smith, ae 72, who could well be her mother (based on timing, location and naming similarity).
